Russell trots op Williams-opvolger Albon: "Hij was altijd één van de beste"

George Russell is sinds dit seizoen actief voor het team van Mercedes. De Britse coureur is vooralsnog bezig met een prima seizoen en eindigde vooralsnog elke race in de top vijf. Russell was in de afgelopen seizoenen actief voor het team van Williams, daar was hij de absolute kopman.

Russell is bij Williams opgevolgd door Alexander Albon. De Thaise Brit reed vorig seizoen in de DTM nadat hij door Red Bull aan de kant was geschoven. Albon werd in 2020 volledig overklast door Max Verstappen en werd voor het seizoen 2021 vervangen door Sergio Perez. Nu krijgt de Thai een nieuwe kans bij het team van Williams en hij presteert naar behoren, tweemaal eindigde hij al in de punten.

Enorm talent

Russell volgt op zijn beurt de verrichtingen van zijn voormalige team op de voet. De recente successen van Albon doen de huidig Mercedes-coureur goed. Tegenover Motorsportweek spreekt de trotse Russell zich uit: "Alex levert echt een exceptionele job. Ik denk dat het geen geheim is dat hij het zwaar had bij Red Bull. Ik denk dat iedereen, zelfs Max, weet dat Alex een enorm talent is."

2011

Albon en Russell kennen elkaar al zeer lang en de Mercedes-coureur is vol lof. Al vroeg zal de Brit dat er veel talent zat verborgen in Albon: "We racen al tegen elkaar sinds 2011. Alex was alleen een paar jaar ouder dan wij. Hij duelleerde toen tegen Nyck de Vries in de KF1, ik kan mij herinneren dat hij altijd mee deed. Hij was altijd één van de beste, het is dus geen verrassing voor mij. Ik ben heel erg blij dat hij weer terug is in de Formule 1."

De carriere van Albon heeft zoveel rare momenten gehad dat het al een wonder is dat hij nog F1 rijdt. Daarnaast doet hij het bijzonder goed bij Williams, zelfs beter dan Russell. Ik hoop echt dat hij een plek krijgt bij een beter team en dat over een paar jaar de duels tussen Albon, Leclerc, Verstappen en Norris gaan.

Ik vind het echt leuk voor Albon dat ie weer een kans heeft gekregen. Hij lijkt zo stilletjes maar hij is een echte knokker volgens mij.

Maar hij had in Monaco mazzel dat hij geen straf kreeg.
