Shovlin verklaart snelheidstekort: "Deels doordat we de grond raken in de bochten"

Het team van Mercedes hoopte in Azerbeidzjan weer wat dichterbij Ferrari en Red Bull Racing te komen. De waarheid is echter anders, de Duitse renstal moet nog een hoop werk verzetten. De eerste twee vrije trainingen verliepen niet geheel naar wens voor Lewis Hamilton en George Russell.

In het winderige Bakoe hadden de coureurs allebei te maken met hevig gestuiter, ze waren echter niet de enige. Tussen het gestuiter door reed Hamilton een zesde en een twaalfde tijd. Zijn teamgenoot Russell was iets minder wisselvallig en noteerde in de eerste training de achtste tijd en in de tweede training reed hij de zevende tijd.

Oncomfortabel

Bij de regerend constructeurskampioen weet men dat er richting morgen nog het een en ander moet gebeuren. Trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin legt tegenover Motorsport.com uit wat er moet gebeuren: "Wij hebben nogal wat werk te verzetten om tijd te vinden over één ronde en over de longrun. De balans is geen groot probleem maar we missen grip in de bochten. Op de rechte stukken is de auto nogal oncomfortabel voor de coureurs dus we moeten dat vannacht verbeteren."

Snelheid

Qua topsnelheid moest het team van Mercedes ook de nodige afstand toegeven op de concurrentie. Shovlin heeft er tevens een verklaring voor: "Onze snelheid op de rechte stukken was ook niet geweldig, dat komt deels doordat we daar de hele tijd de grond raken. We hadden nieuwe onderdelen op de auto dus we gaan eens bekijken of dat heeft bijgedragen aan onze problemen. Al met al bevinden we ons niet in een goede positie en we zullen het moeten zoeken in fundamentele verbeteringen in plaats van finetunen."

Mercedes heeft schijnbaar op de auto van Lewis bepaalde onderdelen getest die ook niet het gewenste effect hebben gebracht. Wat een sof, zeg. En net toen het erop begon te lijken dat het lek enigszins boven was. Het is gewoon pijnlijk om de coureurs op hoge snelheid te zien stuiteren. Kan niet gezond zijn.

Hij zegt toch niet dat ze de grond raken in de bochten maar op het rechte stuk?

Verder zegt hij dat ze zowel in de bochten als op het rechte stuk snelheid tekort komen. Dat is wel verdomd vervelend met een raceauto. Hij zegt verder gewoon wat iedereen kan zien en wat ik onder het artikel over Wolff schreef. Ze komen overal tekort. Low speed, medium speed, high speed en het rechte stuk.
