Vettel geen voorstander van boycot anti-LGBTQ landen

Sebastian Vettel staat bekend als één van de meest uitgesproken coureurs van het startveld. De Duitse Aston Martin-coureur zet zich in voor het klimaat en komt daarnaast op voor LGBTQ-rechten. Vorig seizoen liet hij dat meermaals zien door bijvoorbeeld regenboogschoenen te dragen in Hongarije en Saoedi-Arabië.

Vettel liet zich in het verleden dus horen in de landen waar de LGBTQ-rechten zeer slecht zijn. Vorig jaar was Vettel bijvoorbeeld heel erg uitgesproken in het weekend van de Hongaarse Grand Prix. In dat land werd een controversiële anti-homowet ingevoerd. De Duitse coureur toonde zich het gehele weekend activistisch en droeg voorafgaand de race een shirt met de duidelijke tekst 'same love'.

Impact

Vettel verschijnt wel aan de start in de races in de landen waar LGBTQ-rechten slecht zijn. De viervoudig wereldkampioen is geen fan van een boycot, zo laat hij weten aan Attitude Magazine: "We komen dit jaar in 23 landen. Als we kijken naar de LGBTQ-rechten, dan gaat het is sommige landen beter dan in anderen. We kunnen weigeren daar te racen maar wat dan? Als we er niet rijden dan zijn we machteloos om een verandering teweeg te brengen. Door daar te racen en door een fatsoenlijk stevig standpunt aan te nemen, kunnen we een positieve impact hebben. Normen en waarden stoppen immers niet bij de grens."

Vettel zette zijn mening kracht bij tijdens de eerder besproken Hongaarse Grand Prix van vorig seizoen. Hij is zeer helder over zijn beweegredenen: "Ik deed dat omdat ik wilde laten zien dat ik niet achter die anti-LGBTQ wet stond. Ik doe dat niet voor mijn eigen populariteit, maar ik bereik mijn doel als ik de geraakte mensen een hart onder de riem kan steken. Hopelijk zijn er meer fans door acties anders gaan denken over diversiteit en inclusiviteit, dan ben ik blij. Ik ben blij en vereerd om een bondgenoot te zijn."
