Ook Sainz ziet kansen: "Alles is nog mogelijk morgen"

Carlos Sainz leek op weg naar een eerste pole position in zijn loopbaan. In de eerste run in de beslissende sessie was de Spaanse Ferrari-coureur sneller dan iedereen. Maar in de tweede run werd hij verslagen, teammaat Charles Leclerc en de Red Bulls van Sergio Perez en Max Verstappen waren sneller.

Dat betekent dus dat Sainz morgen de race mag starten vanaf de vierde plaats. De Spanjaard had op meer gehoopt maar er waren genoeg positieve punten, zo deelt hij met Sky Sports: "Het is jammer maar tegelijkertijd hebben we vandaag goede progressie geboekt. Ik had het gevoel dat ik kon meestrijden voor de pole position nadat ik dat tijdens de vorige races niet kon doen."

Mogelijkheden

De Spanjaard gaf alles wat hij in zich had maar het bleek niet genoeg te zijn. Hij baalde dan ook na de kwalificatie, maar op het vaak onvoorspelbare circuit van Bakoe vond hij genoeg goede hoop: "We hebben echt goede progressie geboekt. Dit gebeurt er wanneer je tot de limiet pusht. Soms pak je de eerste plek in de eerste run en som maak je een foutje in Q3. Maar alles is nog mogelijk voor morgen."

Hoopvol

Sainz heeft goede hoop voor de race, net als vrijwel al zijn concurrenten. De Spanjaard start vanaf de tweede startrij en weet dat hij de strijd wederom moet aangaan met de Red Bulls en zijn teamgenoot. "We hebben een sterke kans in de race. Ik denk dat het echt nek aan nek is met Red Bull. Normaal gesproken hebben ze tien rondjes in een stint de betere snelheid maar dat moeten we dit weekend nog maar eens gaan zien."

Ja Roy, zo is het wel een beetje. Carlos kan beter niet te veel zeggen over zijn "sterke kans". Want zolang Max en Charles daar rondrijden is die kans er eentje op sterk water. Daar gebeurt ook niet veel meestal.

Dit is een beetje de perez van verleden jaar aan het worden vind ik. Die kan duidelijk niet echt mee met deze wagens met de 3 voor hem. morgen kan er inderdaad van alles gebeuren. ik verwacht gewoon weer chaos. zoals altijd hier, waarom nu ineens niet? de gehele top 4 kan uitvallen en we hebben ook nog altijd die lucky loewie die mee doet. ik ga maar eens even kijken hoe hoog hij staat.

  En dan denk ik wel eens, Carlos hou je mond nou. Leclerc roeptoetert ook niet op die manier, maar bekijkt het meestal realistisch. En er over praten doet hij sowieso niet veel. Maar sneller zijn dan Carlos doet ie wel.

Op dit circuit heb je eigenlijk vanaf elke startplek nog wel een goede uitgangspositie zolang je maar een goede auto hebt en een waanzinnige topspeed.
Voor Carlos is het hopen op een knotsgekke race want puur op performance is het dit weekend nog niet je van het bij de gebruinde Spanjaard.
