Szafnauer heeft goed nieuws over Formule 1-toekomst Piastri

Oscar Piastri werd afgelopen jaar kampioen in de Formule 2. De Australiër wordt gezien als één van de grootste talenten van het moment. Toch kon Piastri geen Formule 1-stoeltje vinden voor het huidige seizoen. Het talent is verbonden aan Alpine en fungeert daar dit seizoen als derde coureur.

Momenteel gaan er zeer veel verhalen rond over Piastri. De Australiër wordt veelvuldig gelinkt aan het team van Williams, hij zou dan kunnen worden uitgeleend aan die renstal. Volgens meerdere verhalen zou hij in Silverstone al kunnen instappen als vervanger van de tegenvallende Nicholas Latifi. Aankomend seizoen verwacht men hem in ieder geval op de grid.

Duidelijk

Ook Alpine-teambaas Otmar Szafnauer gaat ervanuit dat Piastri in 2023 in de Formule 1 zal rijden. Tijdens de persconferentie voor de teambazen op zaterdagochtend werd Szafnauer gevraagd of Piastri aankomend seizoen in de Formule 1 rijdt. Hij was duidelijk: "Ja. Maar we praten niet over details van contracten die we met coureurs hebben afgesloten. Dat doen we eigenlijk nooit. Hoe graag ik het ook wil vertellen, ik kan het niet doen. Maar zodra ik ja zeg is het wel duidelijk dat dit het plan is."

Las Vegas

Szafnauer wil niets kwijt over de nabije toekomst van Piastri. De verhalen over een uitleenbeurt aan het team van Williams zijn immers krachtig. Of Piastri dit seizoen al gaat racen in de Formule 1 blijft altijd een optie, Szafnauer wil het niet dan ook niet uitsluiten: "Nee, dat kan ik inderdaad niet uitsluiten. Natuurlijk heb ik ook al die verhalen gelezen. Ik kan echter de toekomst niet voorspellen. Als ik dat wel zou kunnen zat ik nu in Las Vegas in plaats van Montreal."

Natuurlijk rijdt hij F1 volgend jaar. Als Alpine geen stoeltje voor hem regelt zijn ze hem kwijt en krijgt Piastri een belletje van de halve paddock. Hoe dan ook F1 dus.
