Verstappen let op Sainz: "Maar vooral focus op mijn eigen prestaties"

Max Verstappen start de Canadese Grand Prix over ongeveer een kwartier vanaf de eerste startplaats. De Nederlander reed gisteren een foutloze kwalificatie maar vandaag worden de punten pas verdeeld. In tegenstelling tot gister is het vandaag droog in Montreal en dat betekent dat alles weer anders is.

Verstappen kan in ieder geval zijn slag slaan in Canada. De Red Bull Racing-coureur gaat aan de leiding in het wereldkampioenschap en zijn rivalen Charles Leclerc en Sergio Perez starten verder naar achteren. Leclerc start zelfs als negentiende naar aan leiding van zijn gridstraf. De Monegask heeft teveel motorcomponenten gebruikt en dat betekent een zware gridstraf.

Focus

Verstappen is zich bewust van het feit dat zijn concurrenten van ver moeten komen. Toch speelt het niet mee in zijn achterhoofd, zo liet hij weten aan Motorsport.com: "Ik weet vanzelfsprekend dat Charles achteraan start. Maar ik moet mijn focus gewoon op mijn eigen prestaties houden. Ik moet zo constant mogelijk zijn."

Sainz

Leclercs Ferrari-teamgenoot Carlos Sainz start de race als derde en hij wordt gezien als de grootste uitdager van Verstappen. De Ferrari zag er in de trainingen zeker niet slecht uit en Verstappen is zich daar ook van bewust. "Als je kijkt naar de long runs van de vrijdag, dan zaten wij en de Ferrari's toch dicht bij elkaar. Ik verwacht dan ook dat het in de race dicht bij elkaar gaat zitten met Carlos."
