Szafnauer tempert de verwachtingen: "We moeten realistisch zijn"

Het team van Alpine beleefde afgelopen weekend in Canada een zeer sterk weekend. Fernando Alonso liet het team juichen door op zaterdag de tweede tijd te noteren in de kwalificatie. Het was een grote verrassing maar de Franse renstal was vrijwel het gehele weekend al zeer snel.

Alonso kende in de race veel minder geluk. De Spanjaard kon in de openingsfase nog aardig meekomen in de kop van het veld maar daarna viel hij ver terug. Een motorprobleem en een tijdstraf zorgde ervoor dat hij slechts als negende werd geklasseerd. Teamgenoot Esteban Ocon kwam beduidend beter voor de dag en eindigde de race op een verdienstelijke zesde plaats.

Geluk

Teambaas Otmar Szafnauer was in ieder geval tevreden met de resultaten in Montreal. De Alpine-chef wil echter niet te hard van stapel lopen. In de F1 Nation Podcast deelt Szafnauer zijn eerlijke voorspelling: "Ik denk dat we realistisch moeten zijn. Als we vanaf nu tot het einde van het seizoen goed werk blijven verrichten, dan is een solide vierde plaats heel erg goed. Met een beetje geluk zijn een podium of een overwinning nodig."

Plek 3

Szafnauer denkt dat een aanval op de kop van het veld zeer lastig gaat worden. De Roemeens-Amerikaanse teambaas denkt dat zoiets er dit seizoen nog niet echt inzit: "Ik denk dat het pakken van de derde plaats heel erg lastig gaat worden met het huidige aantal overgebleven races. Dat zou heel erg lastig zijn. Meer soms een podium of een overwinning? Ja, dat is misschien wel goed mogelijk."
