Wedstrijdjes met automobielen bestaat - bij wijze van - sinds het moment dat de eerste gemotoriseerde vierwielers de fabriek uitrolden in 1886. De drang om harder faster, stronger te gaan zit eenmaal vastgeroest in de mensheid.

De eerste autorace was in 1894. Een 80 kilometer lange betrouwbaarheidstest door de straten van Parijs. De winnaar reed met een gemiddelde snelheid van 16 km/u. In deze tijd een lachtertje, maar toen een bijzondere prestatie.

De eerste race met de naam 'Grand Prix' kwam pas na de 19de eeuwwisseling. Het land van bestemming van deze GP laat zich makkelijk raden: Frankrijk. Op 26 juni 1906 werd de eerste 'grote prijs' verreden vlakbij Le Mans. De wedstrijd heette zo, omdat de beloning (de prijs) bij winst fors was.

Het tweedaagse evenement over circa 1230 kilometer werd gewonnen na 12 uur en 15 minuten door de Hongaar Ferenc Szisz voor Renault met een gemiddelde snelheid van bijna 100 km/u.

Paul Baras (Brasier) leidde de eerste twee ronden van 103 kilometer maar Szisz nam de leiding in de derde ronde en controleerde het evenement daarna om een historische overwinning te boeken.

Tweeëndertig auto's begonnen in paren met de Fiat van Felice Nazzaro als tweede, meer dan een uur achter de winnaar. De snelste ronde op deze baan was 52 minuten en 25 seconden.

Voorloper

De Franse auto-industrie was niet tevreden met de opzet van Gordon Bennett Cups, waarbij elk land drie afgevaardigden mocht sturen. De Fransen voelden zich superieur in het autolandschap met tal van sterke inzendingen op de nominatielijst, maar konden dat niet aan de wereld laten zien.

Toen Frankrijk dankzij het winnen van de Gordon Bennett Cups door Léon Théry het volgende evenement naar zich toetrok, wilde organisatie AFC dat het aantal deelnemers op een andere manier werd geselecteerd. De omvang van de auto-industrie moest de doorslag geven. En de meeste toonaangevende auto-indrustie was in... ...Frankrijk.

Frankrijk zou dus vijftien plaatsen krijgen, Duitsland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk van elk zes en de andere landen (Italië, Zwitserland, België, Oostenrijk en de Verenigde Staten) van elk drie. Andere landen waren niet blij met deze aanpassing. Duitsland zorgde dat de geschillen werden opgelost.

Toen in 1905 weer een Franse rijder won en Frankrijk opnieuw de wedstrijd mocht organiseren, besloot de AFC hun eigen Grand Prix op te zetten. De Gordon Bennett Cups was daarmee verleden tijd.

Niet dat ik me veel ervan herinner als vierjarige gup, maar mijn eerste GP was de Nederlandse van 1985;
Lauda eerste, Prost tweede, Senna derde - geen misselijk podium toch?

  Grappig dat je dat zegt. Mijn eerste was in 1994, maar ik ben seizoen 1985 nu terug aan het kijken. Wat ging die Senna bloedje hard in die Lotus zeg. Het is dat dat ding zo onbetrouwbaar was, anders had hij (in niet de beste wagen van het veld) gewoon kampioen kunnen worden.
  In Portugal vernederd hij iedereen gewoon, zet de nr 2 op meer dan een minuut achterstand en de rest één of meerdere ronden aan de broek. Op Imola leidt hij gewoon weer de race maar had hij te weinig brandstof (net als een aantal anderen) om de finish te halen.
  Maar ik vind het bizar om te zien hoe goed Senna daar al is in zijn tweede jaar.
  
  Sowieso was het gek gesteld met de betrouwbaarheid in die tijd. In die jaren waren er best vaak teams die vaker niet dan wel aan de finish kwamen... ook topteams!
