Zhou had het lastig met dood Hubert: "Lastig te accepteren"

Guanyu Zhou is sinds dit seizoen actief in de Formule 1. De Chinees draait een redelijk seizoen bij Alfa Romeo maar moet vooralsnog zijn ervaren teamgenoot Valtteri Bottas voor zich dulden. De weg naar de Formule 1 was voor Zhou zeer lang en hij kreeg tevens te maken met een aantal tegenslagen.

Voor zijn debuut bij Alfa Romeo was Zhou geruime tijd onderdeel van het opleidingsprogramma van Renault. Hier werd de Chinees ontwikkelingscoureur voor het Formule 1-team van Renault en spendeerde hij veel tijd met zijn mede Renault-junioren. Hij ontmoette hier ook Anthoine Hubert en de twee werden zeer goede vrienden.

Donker weekend

Hubert overleed in 2019 aan de gevolgen van een verschrikkelijke crash in de Formule 2-race op Spa. De dood van Hubert doet nog altijd pijn bij Zhou. In de Beyond the Grid-podcast spreekt hij zich erover uit: "Het was een donker weekend voor de gehele groep. Vooral voor ons als Renault-coureurs omdat we de week ervoor twee weken in Frankrijk waren voor een fietstocht. Alle academie-coureurs waren er ook, ik had het geluk dat ik er was. Anthoine en ik deelde van een kamer omdat we goede vrienden waren. Uiteraard waren we ook altijd tegen elkaar aan het racen en tegen elkaar aan het strijden in de Formule 2."

Shock

De dood van Hubert kwam als een grote schok voor de racewereld. Zhou hoorde het pas laat en had daarna veel moeite om weer in de cockpit te stappen: "Ik was behoorlijk in shock toen ik hoorde wat er was gebeurd. Misschien twintig minuten later hoorde ik dat hij niet meer onder ons was. Het was moeilijk om te racen en ik denk dat de wedstrijdleiding het goed had gedaan door de race te stoppen. Het is heel erg droevig om hem te verliezen en het was lastig te accepteren. Het was de eerste keer dat ik zoiets meemaakte."

Gelukkig is de Formule 1 een stuk veiliger geworden. 50 jaar geleden gebeurde dit meerdere keren per jaar. Nu is het een uitzondering geworden. Het verwerken van zo'n verlies zal 50 jaar geleden net zo zwaar zijn geweest als nu.
