Russell baalt van achtste plaats: "Maakte een foutje in mijn laatste rondje"

George Russell laat dit seizoen regelmatig zien dat de concurrentie rekening moet houden met hem. De Britse Mercedes-coureur eindigde in elke race in de top vijf en is tevens sterk in de kwalificaties. Voor zijn eigen fans in Silverstone kon hij vandaag echter niet schitteren.

Russell hoopte in de natte weersomstandigheden een sterk resultaat te kunnen rijden. De Mercedes-coureur zag er sterk uit in de eerste twee kwalificatiegedeeltes maar de allesbeslissende derde sessie ging het beduidend minder. Russell ging de mist in en noteerde slechts de achtste tijd. Hierdoor moet hij de race morgen starten achter de McLaren van Lando Norris en de Alpine van Fernando Alonso.

Pace

Na afloop was teleurstelling dan ook de overheersende emotie bij Russell. De nog jonge Brit had op meer gehoopt en gaf tekst en uitleg voor de camera's van zijn landgenoten van Sky Sports: "Ik denk dat toen de kwalificatie vorderde het allemaal steeds slechter werd. Ik had veel goed vertrouwen in de eerste kwalificatiesessie en ik noteerde tijden die de gehele tijd goed waren voor de top drie. Ik had dat niet toen het nodig was in Q3. We hadden zeker de pace voor de vierde of vijfde plaats."

Foutje

Russell had verwacht dat er meer in het vat zat maar hij gooide zijn eigen ruiten in. De Mercedes-coureur baalde er flink van en steekt de hand in eigen boezem: "Ik maakte een foutje toen het erom draaide in de laatste ronde. Ik baal dus wel een beetje maar de pace was zeker aanwezig. De pace zag er vanmorgen in de droge weersomstandigheden vrij sterk uit. Het is morgen droog. Onze run met veel brandstof was qua pace vergelijkbaar met de jongens voor ons."

Ik lees op meerdere plekken trouwens dat het doek gevallen is voor Paul Ricard en Spa. Monaco zou er voorlopig nog opstaan. #2023 kalender

  Het is nog niet officieel, de voorlopige kalender wordt eind augustus verwacht maar als er al 24 races op staan dan wordt het lastig voor Spa.
  
  Ik snap helemaal niets van Liberty. Hoe kan een uitverkocht Spa het ooit afleggen tegen een zandbakrace waar geen hond op af komt? En dan met droge ogen zeggen dat de fans zo belangrijk zijn...

  Het is nog niet zo ver, maar toch...
  
  Als Spa wegvalt dan gebeurt dat waarvoor velen (inclusief moi) al voor vreesden toen de F1 in Amerikaanse handen kwam, maar die het toch voor schier onmogelijk hielden dat het echt zo ver zou komen, want zo gek zouden de yanks toch ook weer niet zijn...
  
  Het is haast niet voor te stellen dat alle landen direct om ons heen straks geen GP meer hebben. Echte traditionele F1-landen als Duitsland, Frankrijk, België en Monaco, waarvan de eerste twee ook nog grote spelers zijn in de auto-industrie.
  
  En de coureurs en teams zijn dol op Spa (lay-out) en Monaco (uitstraling en importantie). Laten die het zomaar over zich heenkomen?
  Kortom, is geld het enige wat telt? On-ge-loof-lijk!
