Albon kon ondanks startcrash Silverstone nog steeds beschikken over updates

Het team van Williams introduceerde afgelopen weekend in Silverstone een aantal nieuwe updates. Echter kreeg alleen Alexander Albon de beschikking over het updatepakket. Zijn wagen zag er dan ook iets anders uit dan de auto van zijn teamgenoot Nicholas Latifi. Het team kwam uiteindelijk van een koude kermis thuis.

In de kwalificatie was Latifi veel sneller dan de geüpdatete wagen van Albon. Bij de start van de Grand Prix ging het helemaal mis voor Albon. De Thai werd aangetikt door een Aston Martin en vloog vol de pitmuur in, daarna werd hij nog tweemaal geraakt door collega's die hem niet meer konden ontwijken. De meeste aandacht ging uit naar de hevig gecrashte Guanyu Zhou maar Albon moest eveneens naar het ziekenhuis.

Lastig

Albon bleek diezelfde avond volledig in orde te zijn, dat gold echter niet voor zijn auto. De geüpdatete bolide was zwaar beschadigd en dat komt niet goed uit aangezien Williams een tekort aan reserveonderdelen heeft. Head of vehicle engineering Dave Robson wordt geciteerd door Motorsport.com: "Nadat de auto van Alex afgelopen weekend beschadigd raakte bij een startcrash, is het nogal logistiek lastig om door te gaan naar een sprintweekend."

Repareren

Robson heeft echter wel goed nieuwe voor de fans van het team en Albon. De Britse renstal heeft hard doorgewerkt en laat weten dat er veel is gesleuteld: "Echter is het ons gelukt om het meeste van de auto te repareren of te vervangen zodat we vrijdag kunnen doorgaan met het begrijpen van de updates in VT1. Er is weinig tijd om de auto aan te passen voordat deze naar het parce fermé moet bij een sprintevenement. Dus moeten moedig zijn voor de training als we door willen gaan met het verbeteren van de prestaties."

Dat is natuurlijk echt onzin...
Want Nicholas Latifi reed in Q1 een tijd van 1:41.998, dit terwijl Alexander Albon een tijd reed van 1:42.078, dat is dus maar liefst 0,08 van een seconde langzamer, dit is niet 'veel sneller'.

Ook was de tijd die Latifi neerzette in Q3 niet echt denderend ;-) een gigantisch gat ten opzichte van ZHOU Guanyu, van zo'n 11 seconde.
