Zhou kijkt terug op horrorcrash: "Ik voelde iets druppelen"

Alfa Romeo-coureur Guanyu Zhou was afgelopen weekend in Silverstone de meest besproken coureur. De Chinese coureur raakte betrokken bij een startcrash en hij vloog ondersteboven door de grindbak. Zhou stuiterde vervolgens over de bandenstapel heen en kwam klem te zitten tussen deze bandenstapel en een hek.

De marshalls en het aanwezige medische team bevrijdden Zhou vervolgens uit zijn auto. De Chinees bleek na enkele medische checks ongedeerd en wandelde al snel weer door de paddock. Hij zit dit weekend dan ook gewoon weer achter het stuur in Oostenrijk. Het was tevens de eerste keer sinds zijn ongeval dat Zhou weer met de internationale media sprak.

Handen

In Spielberg keek Zhou rustig terug op zijn crash van een kleine week eerder. De Chinese Alfa Romeo-coureur keek terug op zijn crash en werd geciteerd door Motorsportweek: "Het eerste wat ik deed toen ik over de kop sloeg was mijn handen van het stuur halen. Je kan je handen zeer simpel breken in zo'n crash. Toen ik over de grond rolde wist ik dat er een enorme impact aankwam omdat de auto niet stopte met rollen. Ik probeerde mijzelf zo veilig mogelijk in de auto te positioneren terwijl ik wachtte op de laatste impact."

Brand

Zhou trok dus zijn handen terug en was praktisch een passagier in zijn vliegend Alfa Romeo. Toen hij tot stilstand kwam in de hekken wist hij niet precies wat er aan de hand was: "Toen ik stopte met rollen wist ik niet waar ik was. Dit omdat ik ondersteboven hing. Daarna voelde ik iets druppelen. Ik wist niet zeker of het vanuit de auto kwam of van mijn lichaam. Ik probeerde de motor uit te zetten want die stond toen nog aan. Ik wist dat als er brand zou uitbreken het lastig zou worden om uit de auto te komen. Ik deed dus de motor uit en toen was alles in orde."

Wat een ophef.. was een zware crash, maar beetje overdreven na een week er nog zo op door te gaan. Hij liep een half uur later al door de paddock. Next.

Dat hij tussen de baanafzetting en de tec pro barriere kwam is echt slecht. Hier hoort geen ruimte tussen te zitten. Als er wel brand uit was gebroken, dan hadden ze hem er nooit tussenuit kunnen halen.
