Mercedes-monteurs bouwden auto in drieënhalf uur op na kwalificatiecrash

Lewis Hamilton en George Russell bezorgden hun monteurs vorige week een monsterklus. Beide Mercedes-coureurs crashten in de vrijdagse kwalificatie en de schade was reusachtig. Het team van Mercedes moest dan ook hard doorwerken om het weekend te kunnen redden op de Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.

De Mercedes-monteurs moesten twee afgeschreven auto's volledig opbouwen. Bij Hamilton moest men zelfs een nieuw chassis monteren, Russell kreeg onder andere een nieuwe achtervleugel. Het harde werk kreeg uiteindelijk een beloning want Hamilton reed in de race op zondag naar het podium. Hij werd derde en Russell zorgde voor nog meer feestvreugde door naar de vierde plaats te rijden.

Vanaf de grond

De werkzaamheden van de monteurs waren pas klaar tijdens de tweede vrije training op zaterdag. Russell kon in de beginfase de baan oprijden terwijl Hamilton ongeveer een halve training moest missen. Technisch directeur Mike Elliott legt de werkzaamheden uit in de debrief: "Er moest heel erg werk worden verzet om de auto's op tijd af te krijgen. Bij Lewis was er zelfs zoveel schade gereden dat er ook schade was aan het chassis. Dit was cosmetisch maar dat konden we niet repareren op het circuit. We moesten zijn auto op zaterdag praktisch vanaf de grond opbouwen."

Drieënhalf uur

De monteurs van Mercedes werkten stevig door want de werkzaamheden begonnen pas op de ochtend van de tweede vrije training. Elliott is dan ook zeer lovend over de monteurs: "De auto moest dus vanuit vrijwel niets worden opgebouwd. De motor, de versnellingsbak, de ophanging en alle systemen die om het chassis heen zitten. De monteurs kregen dat in drieënhalf uur voor elkaar op zaterdagmorgen, dat is een bizarre prestatie."

  Maar deze avondklok mag wel af en toe verbroken worden. Maar zoals @hedgehog hierboven al zegt. Als ze op zaterdagochtend zijn begonnen, wisten ze dat ze het auto voor VT2 klaar zouden hebben, anders hadden ze de nacht wel doorgehaald.

Mogen ze niet in de avond doorwerken?
Toch knap dat ze dat voor elkaar kregen.
Ik kan ook voorstellen dat dit op impact heeft op de prestatie van de auto, gezien er weinig tot geen tijd was voor fine-tuning.
