Vasseur blij met F1-rookie Zhou: Doet “perfect werk”

Zhou Ghuanyu, die sinds dit F1-seizoen voor het eerst meedoet, heeft indruk gemaakt op het team van Alfa Romeo. Ondanks een auto die niet het heel betrouwbaar was in de eerste seizoenshelft, en een megaklapper tijdens de Grand Prix van Groot Brittannië, heeft Zhou het team blij gemaakt met werk dat hij niet alleen levert in de auto, maar ook daarbuiten. Teamleider Frederic Vasseur is blij met zijn prestaties.

Vasseur geeft in gesprek met Autosport aan dat het belangrijk was om samen met teamgenoot Bottas punten te verzamelen en de positie in het constructeurskampioenschap te verankeren. Met meteen een goed begin tijdens de kwalificatie van de Grand Prix van Bahrein (een Q2 resultaat) en punten tijdens diezelfde Grand Prix van Bahrein en ook op de Grand Prix van Canada, heeft Zhou ervoor gezorgd dat de leiding van zijn team goed aan het nadenken is of ze het contract van de Chinees verlengen, of dat ze bijvoorbeeld voor F2-coureur en talent Theo Pourchaire gaan.

Verder meent Vasseur hoe blij hij is met de prestaties van zijn rookie. “In het begin hadden we een aantal doelstellingen, zoals het halen van Q2 en om punten dit seizoen te scoren, en tot nu toe vinkt hij alle doelstellingen af. Hij verbetert zich stap bij stap, ondanks het feit dat we problemen hebben met de betrouwbaarheid van de auto. Hij doet het perfect zowel in als buiten de auto, ook omdat hij een goede teamspeler is, een hele goede teamgenoot. Hij brengt de jongens altijd extra motivatie, heeft een positieve instelling en dat is voor ons een goede push.”

De teambaas laat merken dat er druk nagedacht wordt over wie naast Bottas volgend jaar in het team zit, maar dat Zhou zich vooral moet blijven focussen op zichzelf. “Iedereen is meer dan tevreden over zijn werk. Voor mij is het een comfortabele situatie om te weten dat ik meerdere coureurs in de pijpleiding heb. Zhou moet zich focussen op zichzelf en alleen op zichzelf. Ik ben meer dan tevreden.”

ben nog niet echt onder de indruk van die jongen, slechts 1x een top 10 finish terwijl Bottas, ondanks al zijn ervaring toch ook niet het grootste F1 talent, eigenlijk vrijwel continu top 10 rijdt

De vraag is hoe ze Pourchaire in gaan zetten. Die willen ze uiteindelijk in de auto hebben natuurlijk, tenzij ze deze kunnen weggeven aan een andere team die Sauber weer naar voren kan helpen. Zhou is al jaren een degelijke coureur. Veel mensen die de juniorklassen niet volgen dachten dat het puur een commercieel ingegeven keus was. Een topper is het echter ook niet. Bottas is natuurlijk beter, en Pourchaire waarschijnlijk ook. Echter hebben die beiden niet het financiële voordeel dat voor dit armlastige team zo belangrijk is.

Maar goed, als ze inderdaad overgenomen worden door Audi of een ander (met alle geruchten die gaan over nieuwe spelers lijkt Sauber een interessante kandidaat voor verschillende partijen), dan is het belang van Zhou ook een lastige. Maar goed, tot die tijd hebben ze er gewoon een degelijke coureur aan.

  Bottas is gewoon een heel degelijke coureur. Dat bewees hij bij Williams al. Hij is niets minder dan bijv. een Perez.

  Degelijk wil niet zeggen goed. Een jongen als George Russell laat met terugwerkende kracht zien dat Hamilton afgelopen jaren een minderwaardige teammaat heeft gehad. Bottas is een 6je, at best.
  En zou onze Chinese vriend werkelijk een aankomend talent zijn dan zou hij op pure snelheid een Bottas in de pan moeten hakken.

  Dit is veel te makkelijk m.i. Russell is een toptalent die al jaren in de juniorklassen laat zien dat hij een topper is. Voor Bottas geldt dat niet, maar dan vindt ik het alsnog te makkelijk om te roepen dat Bottas minderwaardig is. Geen topper, maar we hebben kunnen zien wat hij in de Williams kon vs Massa en vaak genoeg ook de Ferrari's kon uitdagen. Dat is meer dan een 6je.
  
  Zhou is geen topper, maar wel degelijk goed genoeg om in de F1 te rijden. Het is een rookie, maakt weinig fouten en kennelijk is zijn feedback ook goed.
