Russell verklaart tegenvallende vrijdag: "Dag als een soort testsessie gebruikt"

Het team van Mercedes is niet bepaalt voortvarend begonnen aan het Hongaarse Grand Prix-weekend. Het gat met de concurrentie van Ferrari en Red Bull Racing is vrij fors. Daarnaast waren ook de McLarens beduidend sneller in de eerste twee sessies op het circuit nabij Boedapest.

In de tweede vrije training kwam zevenvoudig wereldkampioen Lewis Hamilton niet veel verder dan de elfde tijd, zijn achterstand op nummer 1 Charles Leclerc bedroeg 1,102 seconden. Hamiltons teamgenoot George Russell deed het iets beter en beëindigde de sessie op de achtste plaats. Daarmee was hij sneller dan zijn teammaat en de Red Bull van Sergio Perez. Toch moest ook hij bijna een seconde toegeven op de kop van het veld.

Testsessie

Russell maakt zich echter niet al te veel zorgen met het oog op de kwalificatie. Het zal morgen immers hard gaan regenen en volgens de Brit heeft men vandaag meerdere experimenten uitgevoerd. Tegenover Motorsport.com bespreekt hij de vrijdag: "De omstandigheden zullen zaterdag en zondag drastisch anders zijn. We hebben de vrijdag dus maar als een soort testsessie gezien."

Productief

De regen zal morgen waarschijnlijk voor de nodige ongemakken gaan zorgen en bij Mercedes laat men er zeker geen gras over groeien. Russell is er nogal duidelijk over en legt de situatie uit: "We kunnen wel dingen gaan optimaliseren maar dat heeft helemaal geen zin voor de rest van het weekend. Vandaag was dus best een zware dag maar het was daarnaast ook een productieve dag."

  Neen,Lewis is nu gewoon het proefkonijn van Mercedes en wordt nergens meer bij betrokken.
  Iemand die emotioneel beschadigd is zal nu als een voorwerp worden beschouwt.

Ik weet niet wat het is met George. Bij Williams vond ik hem sympathiek en was het één van m'n favoriete rijders. Nu die bij Mercedes rijdt is het alsof ie is getransformeerd is in de meest onsympathieke coureur van de grid. Met als hoogtepunt vorige race met z'n commentaar tegenover Perez.
