Wolff juicht na eerste pole Russell: "In elke run meer vertrouwen"

De Hongaarse kwalificatie verliep compleet anders dan velen hadden verwacht. Max Verstappen liep tegen problemen aan in Q3, Sergio Perez haalde de beslissende sessie niet eens en de Ferrari's kwamen net tekort. Hierdoor ging de pole position tot ieders verbazing naar niemand minder dan George Russell.

De Britse Mercedes-coureur pakte zijn eerste pole position uit zijn loopbaan en tevens de eerste pole van zijn team in het huidige seizoen. De regerend constructeurskampioen is bezig met een teleurstellend jaar en deze snelle ronde van Russell kwam als geroepen. Zijn teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton had het lastig en kwam niet verder dan de zevende plaats.

Waarheid

De vreugde en opluchting was na afloop zeer groot bij het team van Mercedes. Teambaas Toto Wolff maakte dat duidelijk in woord en gebaar. De Oostenrijker sprak zich na de sessie uit bij Sky Sports: "De waarheid is dat we aan het begin van de sessie zagen dat onze banden zich in het juiste window bevonden en dat de auto goed gebalanceerd was. Alles viel op zijn plaats. Ze reden heel erg sterk en kregen in elke run meer vertrouwen."

Winnen

Mercedes wacht eveneens op de eerste zege van het seizoen en zo vlak voor de zomerstop kan alles in Hongarije toch nog goed komen. Wolff is dan ook van mening dat een eerste zege er in Hongarije zomaar in kan zitten. Hij is er redelijk duidelijk over: "Ja, ik denk het wel. Maar Ferrari is er altijd en Charles was zeer solide in de laatste race. Max start veel verder naar achteren en dat is niet slecht voor ons resultaat. Hij zal enorm gemotiveerd zijn, dat geldt ook voor Lewis."

Een lachende Wolff ziet er altijd onwerkelijk uit.

  Ehm nee hoor. De baan was ‘groen’ en daarvoor was Ferrari Op droog heer en meester.
  Dus als Russel wint komt dit op het lijstje mazzel voor Mercedes (door Max) en een hele goede afstelling in q3
