Horner onthult hoe Vettel bij Red Bull terecht kwam

In de laatste weken voor de zomerstop kwam Sebastian Vettel met groot nieuws. De Duitse viervoudig wereldkampioen maakte namelijk bekend dat hij na dit seizoen met pensioen gaat. Vettel rijdt momenteel voor het team van Aston Martin maar beleefde zijn grootste successen bij Red Bull Racing, daar zijn ze hem nog niet vergeten.

Vettel debuteerde in 2007 als Red Bull-junior bij het team van BMW Sauber. Al snel werd hij bij het team van Toro Rosso geplaatst. Hij werd voor het seizoen van 2009 gepromoveerd naar het grote Red Bull Racing. Bij de Oostenrijkse renstal beleefde hij zijn grootste successen en werd hij wereldkampioen in 2010, 2011, 2012 en 2013.

Brief

Bij Red Bull denken ze nog vaak terug aan de successen van de Duitser. Ook teambaas Christian Horner kan zich nog goed herinneren hoe Vettel bij Red Bull terecht kwam. Tegenover Channel 4 spreekt Horner zich uit over de begindagen van Vettel: "Wat hij heeft bereikt is echt heel erg opmerkelijk. Ik denk vaak terug aan wat hij bij ons deed. Hij kwam binnen bij ons op zijn dertiende. Hij kwam in contact met Red Bull toen hij een brief schreef waarin hij vroeg om een sponsordeal."

Herinneringen

Vettel en Red Bull bleven met elkaar in contact staan en de Duitser werd het eerste grote succes van de opleidingsploeg van Red Bull. Horner kijkt terug op deze vroege periode: "Zijn eerste deal was een helm in de kleuren van Red Bull. Toen begon zijn verhaal bij het juniorenteam, Toro Rosso, Red Bull en toen de vier wereldkampioenschappen. Het zijn onvergetelijke herinneringen, hij was een groot onderdeel van ons team. Het zal heel erg verdrietig zijn als hij zijn helm aan de wilgen hangt."

De tekst doet het voorkomen alsof Vettel bij BMW Sauber mocht debuteren omdat hij RB-junior was; dit is niet het geval.

Vettel had door de Formule BMW in 2004 te winnen een F1-test verdiend; deze heeft hij bij BMW Williams afgelegd. Naar aanleiding hiervan heeft Thiessen hem aangesteld als testrijder. BMW had op dat moment de eerste optie op Vettel; pas toen Mario Thiessen ervoor koos om Kubica aan te houden ten faveure van Vettel kwam Red Bull weer in beeld.

Maar hoe kwam Vettel dan bij RedBull?
Het staat ondanks de titel niet in het verhaal.
Kwam hij op de fiets? Met de auto of gewoon met het openbaar vervoer?
Nu weten we nog steeds niks.

Wat ik me vooral nog goed kan herinneren is dat Vettel in de BMW vaak heel snel was op vrijdag (op vrijdagen mochten vaak reserve coureurs testen). Toen kwam die race in de USA waar hij meteen een punt scoorde. De eerste indrukken waren meteen raak!

Vond hem maar een irritante vent bij RB. Oorzaak was waarschijnlijk dat ik Mark Webber veel sympathieker vond dan Vettel.

  Webber had geweldige uitspraken. Eén van de leukste vond ik nog zijn chagrijnige interview tijdens Fuji 2007, waar hij en Vettel P2 en P3 lagen en Vettel hem achter de SC uit de wedstrijd tikte:

  @THW,
  Dat moment kan ik me nog goed herinneren. Kostbaar omdat Red Bull toen helemaal nog niet zo een denderende auto had en Webber een podiumplek goed kon gebruiken.
  Vettel herstelde zich wel meer dan uitstekend, door daarna 4e in China te worden als ik het me goed kan herinneren.
