Mercedes ontdekte porpoising pas laat vanwege storm tijdens shakedown

Het team van Mercedes kende dit seizoen een lastige start. De Duitse regerend constructeurskampioen moest snelheid toegeven op concurrenten Red Bull Racing en Ferrari. Eveneens had men zeer veel last van porpoising. Mercedes ontdekte de problemen omtrent het gehobbel pas vrij laat in de voorbereiding.

Het gehobbel zorgde ervoor dat coureurs Lewis Hamilton en George Russell veel moeite hadden met het besturen van hun wagens. Het team moest hard werken om tot een oplossing te komen en vlak voor de zomerstop leek het erop dat men het gat met de top redelijk dicht had gereden. Gedurende het seizoen ondervonden de coureurs zeer veel hinder, vooral op fysiek en sportief vlak.

Eunice

De problemen kwamen pas vrij laat aan het licht bij het team. Tijdens de shakdown op Silverstone had men er namelijk geen last van. Mercedes-kopstuk Andrew Shovlin legt de situatie uit tegenover Motorsport.com, hij wijst naar storm Eunice: "We kregen te maken met windstoten van meer dan 110 kilometer per uur. Meestal begin je een shakedown met een hoge rijhoogte om schade te voorkomen. Daarna zet je de rijhoogte steeds lager. Uiteindelijk zit je op de gebruikelijke rijhoogte en begonnen we het probleem te zien."

Ui pellen

Tijdens de eerste testweek in Barcelona had men voor het eerste echt last van porpoising. Voor Mercedes was dit een lastige periode en moest er snel worden gezocht naar een oplossing. Volgens Shovlin was het moeilijk: "Het was als het pellen van een uit. Hoeveel lagen je er ook vanaf haalt, je blijft altijd hetzelfde zien. We realiseerden ons dat er wel wat zaken bij kwamen kijken. Onze progressie was echter best bemoedigend. Alles wat we deden werd steeds logischer."

Niet zo zeker van dat iedereen de oplossing heeft hiervoor. Het zou me niet verwonderen als een aantal teams gewoon geluk hadden zonder daarvan de ware toedracht te weten.

Mercedes met al hun faciliteiten en mensen deed er erg lang over maar weten nu de oorzaak van dit fenomeen in het design van vloer/difuser/brakeducts/sidepod... en hoe dit te behelpen.
