Albon vergelijkt Red Bull en Williams: "Qua structuur en werkwijze lijken ze op elkaar"

Williams-coureur Alexander Albon maakte dit seizoen zijn comeback in de Formule 1. De Thaise coureur stond vorig seizoen aan de zijlijn bij het team van Red Bull Racing. Albon was daar aan de kant geschoven na een teleurstellend seizoen waarin hij Max Verstappen niet kon bijhouden. Nu rijdt hij weer vol ambitie rond in het Formule 1-veld.

Albon debuteerde in 2019 in de Formule 1 bij het toenmalige Toro Rosso. Na een half jaar werd hij al gepromoveerd naar het grote Red Bull en ruilde hij van team met de tegenvallende Pierre Gasly. In 2020 vielen Albons resultaten tegen waarna hij voor 2021 werd vervangen door Sergio Perez. Na een jaartje racen in de DTM en fungeren als Red Bull-reserve is Albon nu terug in de koningsklasse van de autosport.

Rekeningen

Bij Williams kan Albon nu weer zijn kunsten laten zien. De Britse Thai presteert zeker niet slecht en eindigde al meerdere keren in de punten. In gesprek met Auto, Motor und Sport bespreekt Albon zijn comeback: "Ik heb nog wat rekeningen open staan in de Formule 1. Het perspectief is natuurlijk wel wat anders. Punten voelen als een overwinning voor ons maar ik heb nog steeds veel plezier. Wij zien ook vooruitgang. Het zou pas lastig zijn als we niet konden doorontwikkelen."

Verschil

Albon kon in zijn tijd bij Red Bull meevechten voor de podiumposities, bij Williams liggen de zaakjes echter iets anders. De Britse renstal vecht meestal mee achteraan het middenveld. Albon merkt echter weinig verschil: "Red Bull heeft natuurlijk financiële voordelen. Zelfs met het huidige budgetplafond hebben die nog een impact. Qua structuur en werkwijze lijken de teams op elkaar. De dynamiek hangt af van de medewerkers."

RB heeft betere mensen in zowel de garage als de fabriek en, niet onbelangrijk, de betere coureurs in de wagen zitten. Dat is in totaal dan net die 1 a 1,5 seconde tussen winst en achteraan het middenveld rijden. Overigens zou ik ze eerder in het middenveld plaatsen. Dit is zeker geen achterhoede team meer.
