Shovlin ziet parallellen tussen huidig Mercedes en McLaren in 2009

Regerend constructeurskampioen Mercedes is bezig met een redelijk tegenvallend seizoen. De Duitse renstal begon moeizaam aan het seizoen en kwam veel snelheid tekort ten opzichte van Ferrari en Red Bull Racing. Inmiddels heeft men de weg omhoog ingezet en lijkt men het gat te hebben gedicht met de concurrentie.

Mercedes begon vol goede hoop aan het huidige seizoen en al snel kwamen ze van een koude kermis thuis. Het team had zeer veel last van porpoising en kwam performance tekort. Voor Lewis Hamilton was het een soort déjà vu. In 2009 bevond Hamilton zich bij McLaren namelijk in een soort gelijke situatie.

Gelijkwaardig

Andrew Shovlin, de Trackside Engineering Director van Mercedes, kan zich wel vinden in deze bewering. Shovlin was in 2009 werkzaam bij Brawn GP en bekeek de situatie van een afstandje. Hij wordt geciteerd door de media-afdeling van de Formule 1: "Wij begonnen het seizoen toen op briljante wijze maar we hadden de resources niet om bij te blijven, aan het einde van het jaar hadden we moeite om het podium te bereiken. Als je kijkt naar de situatie waarin McLaren zich toen bevond, de auto was toen gelijkwaardig aan de mogelijkheden van het team."

Ontwikkeling

Uiteindelijk kwam het in 2009 nog goed met McLaren, Hamilton schreef meerdere races op zijn naam. Shovlin denkt dat hij dit seizoen ook nog goed zal komen bij Mercedes: "Toen McLaren eenmaal door had wat er moest gebeuren, ging de ontwikkeling zeer snel de goede kant op. Dat is misschien wel een parallel met ons team. We krijgen de lol langzaam terug met de uitdagingen van de engineering en de ontwikkeling."

Met welk vergelijk komen ze morgen.. Die zomer break is misschien wel fijn voor de monteurs, maar ik ben wel weer toe aan wat actie op de baan ipv deze komkommertijd!

Nou... als ik me het goed kan herinneren waren het er ook maar 2. Maargoed, 2 zou je "meerdere" kunnen noemen maar het klinkt zo overdreven.

McLaren had in 2009 inderdaad de problemen van de eerste seizoenshelft opgelost, maar ze waren daarmee in de tweede seizoenshelft niet opeens het beste team. Ook Ferrari maakte een grote sprong, en Red Bull was natuurlijk het hele jaar al super snel. Overigens was Brawn ook niet meteen prut. Ik herinner me dat ook Barrichello later in het jaar nog twee races wist te winnen (eentje op Monza zeg ik uit mijn hoofd, die andere weet ik niet meer).

Teams die begin dat jaar goed waren maar juist later terug zakten waren Williams en Toyota.

  @JH56, waar damon op doelt is dat Brawn ook niet gelijk wegzakte halverwege het seizoen, daar waar ze de eerste helft domineerde. Rond de helft van 2009 was er geen team die de overhand had, pas op het einde was RB het te kloppen team.

Het vergelijk gaat niet op en onbewust geeft Shovlin dat zelf al aan.
Waar Brawn niet verder doorontwikkelde kunnen RB en Ferrari dat wel doen...
