NASCAR-wereld ontvangt Räikkönen: "Denk dat hij snel zal zijn"

Enkelvoudig Formule 1-wereldkampioen Kimi Räikkönen keert aankomend weekend terug in de actieve autosport. Räikkönen reed afgelopen seizoen zijn laatste Grand Prix en liet de cockpit sindsdien links liggen. Aankomend weekend komt hij in Watkins Glen in actie tijdens een NASCAR race. De Fin zal in actie komen voor het team van Trackhouse.

Räikkönen heeft zich goed voorbereid op zijn comeback in de racerij. De Finse coureur heeft meters gemaakt in de simulator van zijn team en mocht eveneens de baan al op. Op de Virginia International Raceway draaide de Fin afgelopen weekend al enkele rondjes in de Chevrolet waarmee hij aankomend weekend in actie gaat komen.

De voormalige Ferrari-coureur wordt in ieder geval met open armen ontvangen in de NASCAR-wereld. NASCAR-coureur Daniel Suarez deelt zijn verwachtingen met Motorsport.com: "Ik denk dat hij snel zal zijn. De snelheid is er zeker maar het racen zal een apart proces zijn. Het maakt namelijk niet uit hoeveel uren je doorbrengt in de simulator of hoeveel je test, het racen is het racen. Het is moeilijk en hij kent de coureurs niet allemaal. Hij weet niet hoe ze rijden en hoe agressief ze zijn. Dus daar moet hij aan wennen."

  Nou dat valt aardig tegen @Maximo, ten eerste probeerden niet veel het. Die het probeerden hadden wisselend succes. Geen een won een titel, Montoya misschien een race? Niet veel in ieder geval. Montoya was iig geen onverdienstelijke F1 coureur.

Toch is het ook veelzeggend dat talloze coureurs die in de F1 geen stoeltje meer kunnen krijgen omdat hun prestaties daar niet meer naar zijn, dan zo bij de Nascar in kunnen stappen en daar vaak binnen no-time heel snel zijn, races winnen, titels pakken.

Aan de ene kant mooi dat Nascar de ruimte biedt om racers van over de hele wereld kansen te bieden, maar aan de andere kant zegt het ook wat over het niveau dat toch echt een flinke stap lager is dan de top van de F1.

Ik zie geen enkele top Nascar coureur in een top F1 auto stappen en het dan zijn teamgenoot a la Lewis, Charles, Max en ook Perez en Sainz moeilijk maken.

  Vergeleken met F1 is Nascar een veredelde demolition derby en de rijders zijn ook van dat niveau.

  @HarryLam, net zo demolition derby als btcc of andere toerwagen klasses. Of kijk eens porsche cup, dat gaat er ook niet zachtzinnig aan toe. Met open wheel racers kan dat gewoon niet, daar komt het vooral door.
