Wolff verwacht onderlinge strijd bij betere prestaties: "De auto was onze grootste tegenstander"

Regerend constructeurskampioen Mercedes heeft een lastige eerste seizoenshelft achter de rug. De Duitse renstal moest veel snelheid toegeven op de concurrentie van Ferrari en Red Bull Racing. In de laatste paar races voor de zomerstop had Mercedes de problemen onder controle en had men het gat met de concurrentie verkleind.

Mercedes-coureurs Lewis Hamilton en George Russell rijden regelmatig rond in niemandsland. Red Bull en Ferrari zijn veel sneller en Mercedes is op zijn beurt veel sneller dan de teams uit het middenveld. Desondanks de grote verschillen maken Russell en Hamilton er vaak wel het beste van, in Hongarije veroverde Russell bijvoorbeeld de pole position.

Grootste tegenstander

Teambaas Toto Wolff ziet dan ook dat Hamilton en Russell elkaar voorlopig moeten helpen om het team vooruit te krijgen. In gesprek met de Italiaanse tak van Motorsport.com legt Wolff de situatie uit: "Ik denk dat de auto de grootste tegenstander was voor George en Lewis, dat waren de andere coureurs niet. Op sommige punten is dat ook zeker een voordeel. Ze gebruikten verschillende oplossingen en set-ups. Het doel was om bruikbare informatie te verzamelen om uit de situatie te komen."

Spanning

Hamilton en Russell vochten in de eerste seizoenshelft nog geen onderlinge duels uit. Wolff denkt dat dit in de toekomst wel zal gaan gebeuren: "Als onze doelen zeges en titels worden, dan denk ik dat het onderlinge respect een belangrijke factor zal gaan worden. Wanneer je strijdt voor de hoogste prijzen denk ik dat het normaal is dat er wat spanning ontstaat. Maar als mensen elkaar onderling respecteren dan zal het niet te ver gaan."

Je hebt denk ik gelijk. Dat is een betere uitkomst van een rijder inderdaad.

Ik ben wel benieuwd wat er gebeurd als Sir Lewis voor zijn 8ste kan vechten en Russell voor zijn eerste.

  Dat (Lewis/Nico) scenario geldt eigenlijk alleen wanneer RBR en Ferrari dan niet meer meedoen om de overwinningen en dat zie ik niet snel gebeuren, eerlijk gezegd.

Die onderlinge strijd heeft Hamilton al duidelijk anders over gedacht. Duwde Russell pardoes van de baan toen die op nieuwere banden hem in wilde halen.
Hamilton is al vanaf dag 1 met Russell bezig. Wederom niets mis mee. Het is de opdracht van een rijder om de carrière van zijn teamgenoot om zeep te helpen.

  Kleine nuance, misschien? "Het is de opdracht van een rijder om de carrière van zijn teamgenoot dusdanig 'vorm te geven' dat deze voortaan fulltime in dienst gaat rijden van deze rijder ;-)

Zo redenerend gold dat voor iedere coureur het afgelopen decennium; het waren niet Hamilton, Rosberg of Bottas het was de auto van Ferrari, Haas, Red Bull enz…

Dat verheven geklets over zijn coureurs en daarmee tegelijkertijd het denigrerende toontje over alle andere coureurs, maakt hem in mijn ogen buitengewoon zielig. Ongeloofwaardig was hij al een hele poos...!
