NASCAR-legende verwacht geen zege voor Räikkönen: "Duurt meestal wel eventjes"

Aankomend weekend keert Kimi Räikkönen terug in de actieve racerij. De Finse enkelvoudig wereldkampioen Formule 1 neemt dan deel aan een NASCAR-race op het iconische circuit van Watkins Glen. De terugkeer van Räikkönen is zeer opvallend aangezien hij pas eind vorig seizoen met pensioen ging.

De comeback van Räikkönen zorgt ervoor dat alle blikken aankomend weekend gericht zijn op de NASCAR. De Fin kwam in het verleden al uit in een lagere NASCAR-categorie maar zal nu voor het eerst de degens kruisen met de grote jongens. Toch verwacht men geen wonderen van Räikkönen en zijn tijdelijke team Trackhouse Racing.

Zege

Räikkönens aankomende rivalen verwachten niet dat de Fin ze gelijk zal gaan verslaan. Ook drievoudig Daytona 500-winnaar Denny Hamlin deelt die mening. Hij wordt geciteerd door Racefans: "Het is een grote kans voor hem en Trackhouse maar ik denk niet dat hij gaat meestrijden voor de zege. Dat vraagt namelijk tijd. Als je kijkt naar coureurs die naar de stockcars komen vanuit de open wheel-klassen, dan duurt het meestal wel eventjes."

Publiciteit

Maar Hamlin ziet ook dat de tijdelijke komst van Räikkönen voor veel extra media-aandacht zorgt. De NASCAR-klasse is zeer populair in de Verenigde Staten maar nu kijkt de rest van de wereld ook mee naar de race op Watkins Glen. Hamlin is er blij mee: "Ik denk dat het goed voor onze sport is om goede publiciteit te ontvangen. Maar ik denk niet dat het de dynamiek van de race veel gaat veranderen."

Tijdens zijn vorige NASCAR-avontuur reed Raikkonen naar een indrukwekkende 15e plaats, dus een zege lijkt me nu wel binnen handbereik. Het is immers maar 11 jaar geleden dat hij zijn laatste race in die discipline heeft gereden.
