Horner gaat Vettel missen: "Doet pijn om hem in het middenveld te zien"

Sebastian Vettel is momenteel bezig met een afscheidstournee in de Formule 1. De Duitse Aston Martin-coureur kondigde vorige maand zijn pensioen aan en na dit seizoen hangt hij zijn helm aan de wilgen. De viervoudig wereldkampioen kan rekenen op een warm afscheid, hij ontvangt veel lovende woorden.

Vettel is momenteel niet bezig met het beste jaar uit zijn Formule 1-loopbaan. De Duitser heeft het lastig met zijn Aston Martin en een vijfde wereldtitel is zo goed als onmogelijk. Vettel scoorde al zijn wereldtitels in dienst van het team van Red Bull Racing. Bij de Oostenrijkse renstal zijn ze hem nog lang niet vergeten.

Juiste moment

Red Bull-teambaas Christian Horner is nog steeds lovend over de coureur die zijn team vele successen bezorgde. De Britse teambaas gaat Vettel missen. Horner wordt geciteerd door Motorsportweek: "Ik weet zeker dat hij verder gaat met zijn leven en dat hij fantastische dingen gaat doen. Het is erg jammer dat hij hier niet meer aanwezig zal zijn. Ik denk wel dat dit het juiste moment is voor hem."

Middenveld

Vettel is tegenwoordig niet meer de coureur die hij was in zijn Red Bull-tijd. De Duitser vecht niet meer om de zeges maar moet nu genoegen nemen met het middenveldduel. Het doet Horner pijn: "Het is niet fijn om hem nu te zien rijden in het middenveld, dat verdient hij helemaal niet. Ik denk dat het nu de goede timing is om te zeggen dat hij de Formule 1 moet gaan verlaten."

Het zijn naast Max de meest succesvolle rijders uit hun renstal. En het lijkt erop dat RBR voorlopig geen "echte talenten" in de wachtkamer heeft. Gasly is een "net niet" en Tsunoda zit er vanwege Honda en is een typische Japanner in F1: de wil is er, de kunde minder.

En alles wat de afgelopen jaren in het RBR junior programma reed is óf niet goed genoeg, óf raken verwikkeld in aparte incidenten waardoor ze zich in de eigen voeten schieten. Het is niet voor niets dat RBR een Sergio Perez van buiten af moesten binnen halen.

Ik zal zeggen: Óf stop het junior programma, óf ga er enorm in investeren, en heel snel, om het weer op een juist niveau te brengen, zodat RBR in de toekomst weer gebruik van kan maken en nieuwe Vetteltjes te creëren.
