Gasly denkt nog niet aan toekomst: "Voor het eerst kan ik kiezen wat er gaat gebeuren"

Pierre Gasly is al jarenlang onderdeel van de Red Bull-familie. De Franse coureur staat momenteel onder contract bij AlphaTauri. Doorgroeien naar het grote Red Bull Racing is voorlopig niet mogelijk, beide Red Bull-coureurs beschikken over een langdurig contract. Gasly heeft nog een contract bij AlphaTauri tot en met 2023, daarna kan hij gaan en staan waar hij maar wil.

Gasly is momenteel bezig met een matig seizoen. De Fransman heeft in de afgelopen jaren echter regelmatig laten zien wat hij in zijn mars heeft. Vorig seizoen kwam hij bijvoorbeeld zeer regelmatig zeer sterk voor de dag. Hij wilde dan ook graag doorgroeien naar Red Bull Racing maar vanwege een contractverlenging van Sergio Perez werd de droom van een Red Bull-comeback onmogelijk.

Opties

Voorlopig rijdt Gasly dus nog voor AlphaTauri. In de toekomst zou hij zomaar kunnen overstappen naar een concurrerende renstal, er is immers interesse genoeg. Tegenover Autosport spreekt Gasly zich uit over de kwestie: "Ik denk dat je open moet zijn. Er komt sowieso een gesprek met Red Bull en ze zullen de eerste zijn die alles weten over de situatie. Natuurlijk is het de eerste keer in mijn loopbaan dat ik kan kiezen wat er gaan gebeuren. Het is echter nog steeds vroeg, we zijn pas middenin 2022. Op het juiste moment zullen we beslissen wat de beste opties zijn voor de toekomst."

Compleet

Gasly heeft wel het gevoel dat hij als coureur steeds meer is gegroeid. De Fransman ziet dat hij steeds meer en meer een rol van teamleider op zich heeft genomen. "Ja ik voel mij meer compleet. Ik denk dat het een sport is waar ik mij nu veel completer in voel dan toen ik hier aankwam. Dit omdat het nogal een complexe sport is. Het draait niet alleen om racen. Het gaat er ook om dat je het team in de richting stuurt die jij wil. Het gaat erom dat je de mensen samen laat werken richting hetzelfde doel. Je moet iedereen motiveren want het is zwaar."

Hij zal zichzelf toch echt moeten verbeteren ten opzichte van de eerste bijna 60% van het seizoen om midden 2023 wat te kiezen te hebben...

Hij kan inderdaad kiezen.
Tussen: Bij Red Bull blijven, naar Haas gaan, naar Williams gaan, naar Sauber gaan.

Daarna houdt het zo'n beetje op met de keuzes.

  Hij Red Bull blijven is zijn enige kans op een top zittje, namelijk bij het RBR team, maar dan moet hij het wel beter gaan doen dan dit jaar. Bij veel rijders zie je ze elk jaar beter worden. Zeker op jonge leeftijd. Bij Gasly duidelijk niet.
