Alfa Romeo stopt na 2023 als titelsponsor Sauber

Het team van Sauber rijdt tegenwoordig in de Formule 1 onder de naam Alfa Romeo. Het Italiaanse automerk is de hoofdsponsor van het team. Het lijkt er echter op dat de deal snel ten einde gaat komen. Meerdere media melden vandaag dat Alfa Romeo heeft gecommuniceerd dat ze na 2023 stoppen als titelsponsor.

Alfa Romeo werd in 2017 titelpartner van het team van Sauber. Alhoewel het team officieel door het leven ging als het Formule 1-team van Alfa Romeo was het geen fabrieksteam. Alfa is niets meer dan de titelsponsor van Sauber. Vandaag maakte men in een persbericht bekend dat de samenwerking na 2023 ten einde komt.

Ommekeer

In het persbericht laat het Italiaanse automerk, onderdeel van de Stellantis groep, weten waarom ze Sauber gaan verlaten. Alfa kijkt naar de toekomst van het merk: "Aangezien de economische en industriële ommekeer van het merk in 2022 nu een feit zijn, zal Alfa Romeo nu de vele mogelijkheden bekijken en beslissen wat de beste keuze is voor de langetermijnstrategie en de positionering van het merk."

Audi

Het nieuws van Alfa Romeo komt op een opvallend moment. Vandaag maakte Audi namelijk bekend dat ze vanaf 2026 de sport gaan betreden. Het Duitse automerk gaf aan dat ze nog in onderhandeling zijn met teams voor een mogelijk partnership. Het team van Sauber wordt veelvuldig genoemd als partner. Het lijkt erop dat deze deal nu een kwestie van tijd gaat worden.

  Eerst even ene paar jaar overgang en niet de enge dag Alfa heten en de volgende dag Audi: heel logisch, zeker ook omdat Audi mede eigenaar wordt en niet alleen sponsor

  Ergens is het inderdaad een verrassing. Aan de andere kant, misschien wil Audi al eerder 'inkopen' om de organisatiestructuur vorm te geven, mensen aan te trekken en vooral veel wil leren in de 2 jaar voorafgaand aan de 'officiële' toetreding. Dan zijn ze in ieder geval goed voorbereid.

  Dat begrijp ik StevenQ. Maar het gaat nog steeds om de timing. 2024 betekent dus dat er 2 jaar overbrugd moet worden. En dat is een vreemde en lange tijd waarin de reden die je opgeeft, niet echt logisch is. Zeker niet omdat Finn Rausing zijn meerderheidsbelang al deels verkocht heeft aan Audi.

  Dat hebben ze volgens mij in het WRC gedaan. Eerst 2/3 seizoenen "testen" als Skoda om vervolgens een worp naar de titel te doen als VW.

  Buiten dat een Ferrari-motor een probleem is gezien de geschiedenis tussen de twee merken (wat het wat anders maakt dan BMW.Sauber-Ferrari) zou het wel erg treurig zijn wanneer een merk als Lamborghini op deze manier in de F1 actief zou zijn. Eigenlijk vind ik het in het geval van alle merken die niets met de auto te maken hebben al raar. Dus ook in het geval van Alfa, en Lotus en zelfs Aston Martin, ondanks de link met de eigenaar en het feit dat ze van dezelfde krachtbronnen gebruik maken.
