VT2 in Japan en Amerika duurt half uur langer voor bandentest

Bandenleverancier Pirelli is momenteel druk bezig met de ontwikkeling van de nieuwe banden voor 2023. Regelmatig worden deze nieuwe compounds tijdens vrije trainingen of tijdens speciale bandentests uitgetest door de teams. Voor het tweede deel van het seizoen heeft men echter een andere opvallende oplossing gevonden.

Tijdens de Japanse en Amerikaanse Grand Prix zullen namelijk de vrije trainingen worden verlengd om de nieuwe banden te kunnen testen. In de tweede vrije trainingen op de circuits van Suzuka en Austin wordt er geen 60 maar 90 minuten gereden, zo geeft Pirelli aan. Als het gaat regenen tijdens een van deze sessies wordt het plan doorgeschoven naar het Mexicaanse Grand Prix-weekend.

Pirelli-chef Mario Isola staat volledig achter de plannen. De Italiaan ziet meerdere voordelen en denkt dat hiermee problemen worden verholpen. Isola legt zijn idee uit aan de Britse tak van Motorsport.com: "De tweede vrije training zal 90 minuten lang zijn in plaats van 60 minuten. Hierdoor hebben we meer flexibiliteit. Voor de teams zal het vergelijkbaar zijn als in een normale tweede training. Ik denk dat we met dit huidige plan een goede oplossing hebben gevonden voor het moment. Het is natuurlijk de eerste keer dus we moeten kijken of het werkt."
