Russell baalt van zesde plek: "Dit was niet briljant"

George Russell had op meer gehoopt in de kwalificatie op Zandvoort. De Britse Mercedes-coureur kwam uiteindelijk niet verder dan de zesde plaats, het was een fikse teleurstelling voor de getalenteerde Brit. Russell is bezig met een sterk weekend maar hij speelde in de kwalificatie geen rol van betekenis.

Russell kon zich in zijn laatste run niet verbeteren door een onfortuinlijke spin van Red Bull-coureur Sergio Perez. De Mexicaan was de fout ingegaan in de kombocht en stond achterstevoren in het gras onderaan de bocht. Russell kon zich niet verbeteren maar wilde niet teveel balen, hij denkt namelijk dat hij morgen sneller kan zijn dan Perez en de Ferrari's.

Russell had op meer gehoopt en was na afloop dan ook overduidelijk teleurgesteld. Na de derde training had hij op meer gerekend en hij deelt zijn gedachten met Sky Sports: "Dit was niet briljant. Ik had een goed gevoel na VT3 maar het lukte bij niet. Ik weet niet waardoor dat komt. Uiteindelijk was het een gebrek aan performance in Q2 wat invloed had op mij in Q3. We moesten rijden op de tweede set banden waardoor we slechts één set over hadden voor Q3."
