Szafnauer gaat maandag in gesprek met Piastri over vervolg seizoen

Afgelopen vrijdag kwam er eindelijk een einde aan de lange soap omtrent Oscar Piastri. De CRB kwam met hun oordeel naar buiten en daaruit bleek dat het team van McLaren de zaak had gewonnen. Piastri mag aankomend seizoen uitkomen voor de Britse renstal. Alpine blijft daardoor met lege handen achter en moet nog beslissen over de nabije toekomst van Piastri.

Alpine kondigde Piastri vorige maand immers aan als de vervanger van Fernando Alonso. Piastri zelf ontkende het bestaan van dat contract en nu blijkt dat hij gelijk had. Tot en met het einde van dit seizoen staat de jonge Australiër nog wel onder contract bij Alpine. Hij is daar nu immers de reservecoureur en is dit weekend aanwezig op de Alpine-fabriek.

Maandag

Alpine-teambaas Otmar Szafnauer wilde er in Zandvoort niet te veel woorden aan vuil maken. Szafnauer gaat dit weekend nog geen beslissing maken over Piastri's toekomst. Op de teambazenpersconferentie op zaterdagochtend was hij heel erg duidelijk: "Hij is bij ons dit weekend, hij doet simulatorwerk. We maken daar een beslissing over en hij gaat daar dit weekend mee door. Er zijn nog een paar dagen te gaan, vandaag en morgen. Op maandag gaan we samen met hem een beslissing maken."

McLaren

Bij het team van McLaren gaan ze het liefst zo snel mogelijk aan de slag met Piastri. Vooralsnog moeten ze dus tot minimaal maandag wachten. Szafnauer wil op de persconferentie nog niet aangeven of ze Piastri vervroegd naar McLaren laten vertrekken: "We gaan maandag een beslissing maken. Ik wil er hier niet over nadenken omdat we nog aan nog veel meer dingen moeten denken."

Er zal wel een financieel aspect zijn dat nu gaat spelen om Piastri eerder te laten vertrekken. Wellicht dat de kosten die Alpine moet betalen aan McLaren kunnen wellicht al komen te vervallen en wie weet wat er nog uit te halen is voor Alpine.
