Sainz hoopte op snelste tijd: "In Q3 had ik geen tow"

Carlos Sainz start morgen vanuit het achterveld vanwege een motorstraf. Die straf hield hem echter niet tegen om in de kwalificatie voor goud te gaan. De Spaanse Ferarri-coureur wilde het thuispubliek van zijn werkgever vermaken met een goed resultaat maar in de slotseconden werd hij verslagen door zijn teamgenoot Charles Leclerc.

Sainz moest zelfs genoegen nemen met de derde tijd in de kwalificatie. Naast Leclerc reed namelijk ook Max Verstappen een snellere tijd. De Spanjaard baalde overduidelijk als een stekker maar wist in zijn achterhoofd allang dat deze kwalificatie meer voor de eer was. Zijn motorstraf werpt hem ver terug op de startgrid en dat is lastig om te verteren op Monza.

Na afloop van de derde kwalificatiesessie sprak de Spanjaard zich uit tegenover interviewer van dienst Davide Valsecchi. Sainz maakte van zijn hart geen moordkuil en was eerlijk: "Eerlijk gezegd was dit best een goede kwalificatie. Ik voelde mij heel erg goed. Ik was keihard aan het pushen in Q1 en Q2 maar in Q3 had ik helemaal geen tow. Dat kostte mij twee of drie tienden voor de pole. Maar goed, ik start morgen als laatste en dit is niet echt iets wat mijn leven gaat veranderen."
