Herta begrijpt uitblijven superlicentie: "Ik wil niet binnenkomen als uitzondering"

Colton Herta stond afgelopen maand in het middelpunt van de aandacht. De Amerikaanse Indycar-coureur werd veelvuldig in verband gebracht met een overstap naar de Formule 1. Herta stond op het punt te gaan tekenen bij AlphaTauri. Hij heeft echter te weinig superlicentiepunten. De Amerikaan wilde geen uitzondering vormen.

Red Bull deed er alles aan om ervoor te zorgen dat Herta alsnog een superlicentie kon ontvangen. Red Bull-adviseur Helmut Marko sprak van een force majeure maar de FIA leek daar niet in mee te gaan. Uiteindelijk ging het plan van Red Bull dan ook niet door en rijdt Herta aankomend seizoen definitief niet in de Formule 1. AlphaTauri lijkt nu zijn zinnen te hebben gezet op Nyck De Vries.

Uitzondering

Herta zelf heeft vrede met de situatie. De Amerikaan begrijpt het standpunt van autosportfederatie FIA. Herta kan er meeleven en sprak zich uit in gesprek met Motorsport.com: "Ik heb begrip voor de positie van de FIA. Ik vind wel dat de Indycar niet voldoende erkenning krijgt in het puntensysteem voor de superlicentie. Ik begrijp het wel vanuit hun oogpunt. Ik wil dan ook niet binnen komen als een soort uitzondering."

Asian Regional Formula

Het was nog wel mogelijk om voor de start van het komende Formule 1-seizoen een superlicentie te halen. Herta zat echter helemaal niet te wachten op die bijzondere route: "Volgens mij was het mogelijk om iets als de Asian Regional Formula te rijden. Na vier jaar als professioneel coureur vind ik niet dat ik nog in een feeder serie moet gaan rijden. Dat heb ik dan ook niet echt overwogen."

Belachelijk dat je in één of andere flut serie wel genoeg punten zou kunnen halen, maar als meervoud winnaar in de één na hoogste open wheel klasse niet.
Wel klasse dat hij netjes blijft, en voor hem geen uitzondering verwacht.

Wat is eigenlijk de reden waarom je zo weinig punten in de indy car krijgt ten opzichte van een feeder serie?

  Zo weinig valt ook wel mee, gelijk aan F3 of LMP1 WEC
  Als je wint krijg je gewoon 40 punten en kan je gelijk door. 2 jaar top 3 mag je ook door.
  
  F2 auto's zijn meer vergelijkbaar met F1, rijden op dezelfde banen en op Pirelli banden. Ik denk dat daar het grootste verschil in zit.
