'Red Bull wilde Herta inzetten tijdens DTM-race'

Vorige week werd bekend dat Red Bull het plan om Colton Herta te contracteren voor 2023 liet varen. De Amerikaanse Indycar-coureur kon geen superlicentie meer behalen en de FIA wilde geen uitzondering maken voor Herta. Red Bull had allerlei plannetjes bedacht om Herta toch in aanmerking te laten komen voor een superlicentie.

Enkele weken geleden liet Red Bull-adviseur Helmut Marko doorschemeren dat Herta op pole position stond om bij AlphaTauri te tekenen. Bij de Italiaanse zusterrenstal van Red Bull Racing moest hij de opvolger worden van Pierre Gasly. De Fransman heeft immers zijn zinnen gezet op een overstap naar Alpine. De FIA wilde voor Herta geen uitzondering maken Herta aangezien de Amerikaan niet genoeg superlicentiepunten heeft.

De overstap naar de Formule 1 ging dus niet door. Dat betekende dus ook dat Red Bull al hun plannetjes met Herta in de prullenbak kon gooien. Marko en consorten hadden meerdere ideeën bedacht om Herta toch in aanmerking te laten komen voor een superlicentie. Volgens Motorsport-Total wilde Red Bull Herta in actie laten komen tijdens de DTM-race op het circuit van Spielberg. Superlicentiepunten verzamelen in die enkele race zou moeilijk worden maar Red Bull zag het volgens het medium als een soort ultieme marketingstunt. Ook wilde men Herta daar mogelijk presenteren.
