Pirelli verwacht totaal nieuwe race in Singapore

Aankomend weekend keert de Grand Prix van Singapore terug op de Formule 1-kalender. De Grand Prix in de Aziatische stadsstaat ontbrak in de afgelopen twee seizoenen op de kalender vanwege de coronapandemie. Nu keert de race terug en verwacht bandenleverancier Pirelli dat het een grote uitdaging gaat worden.

De baan in Singapore is voor ieder weer eventjes nieuw. Veel coureurs moeten in hun geheugen graven om het een en ander terug te halen van het circuit. Een enkeling heeft zelfs nog nooit geracet om het stratencircuit. Tevens wordt er voor het eerst gereden met de huidige wagens op de baan. De omstandigheden spelen in Singapore ook altijd mee, fysiek gezien is de race loodzwaar.

18-inch

Ook bij Pirelli bereidt men zich voor op een listige wedstrijd in Singapore. Men spreekt zelfs van een soort nieuwe race. Motorsport directeur Mario Isola spreekt zich uit in een persbericht: "Het de 18-inch banden, die een compleet andere samenstelling en structuur hebben dan drie jaar geleden, en met het nieuwe asfalt in Singapore is het dit jaar bijna een totaal nieuwe race."

Zachtste compounds

Isola verwacht dat bandenmanagement een grote rol gaat spelen in de aankomende Grand Prix van Singapore. De Italiaan verklaart dan ook de compoundkeuze: "In Singapore zijn er veel langzame bochten en draait het allemaal om het maximaliseren van de tractie. We hebben gekozen voor de drie zachtste compounds. Dit vanwege de maximale snelheid en grip. Het is belangrijk om de achterbanden te managen om de benodigde tractie te garanderen."

Ik heb het gevoel dat Pirelli zich weer aan het indekken is. Het blijft toch altijd de vraag of ze gelijk hebben met wat ze roepen, maar helaas zitten ze te vaak fout. Ik blijf het de meest belachelijke bandenleverancier vinden die de F1 heeft gehad. Michelin heeft ooit geblunderd, maar wisten ook waarom en kwamen er eerlijk voor uit. Pirelli blundert te vaak en wijzen altijd met het vingertje naar iets of iemand anders.
