Wolff ziet wederzijds respect tussen Hamilton en Russell: "Alleen Zandvoort was te close"

Het team van Mercedes is bezig met een zeer lastig seizoen. De Duitse renstal vecht dit seizoen niet mee om de zeges en coureurs Lewis Hamilton en George Russell konden de degens op geen enkel moment echt kruisen. De Britse coureurs zijn dit seizoen voor het eerst elkaars teamgenoten en volgens Toto Wolff hebben ze veel respect voor elkaar.

Russell is sinds dit seizoen actief voor het team van Mercedes. De getalenteerde Brit is de opvolger van Valtteri Bottas en Russell is regelmatig sneller dan zijn teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton. De zevenvoudig wereldkampioen heeft het lastig dit seizoen en heeft op geen enkel moment echt meegevochten om de zeges. Toch helpen de twee Britten elkaar waar ze maar kunnen.

Zandvoort

Aangezien Hamilton en Russell aan elkaar gewaagd zijn, verwacht men in de toekomst wel een soort clash. Mercedes-teambaas Toto Wolff liet aan Channel 4 weten hoe hij hiermee om zal gaan: "Ze moeten hun relatie op het circuit nog uitvogelen want er is nog geen close racing geweest tussen hen. Ik denk dat alleen Zandvoort voor mijn gevoel een beetje te close werd. Dat kon fout gaan maar dat weten ze. Het zijn experts."

Respect

Ondanks het momentje op Zandvoort, waar Hamilton fel verdedigde tegen Russell, ziet Wolff geen andere grote momenten. De Oostenrijker ziet dat Russell zijn rol van jonge hond heeft geaccepteerd: "Ik denk dat ik hun relatie het beste kan omschrijven met respect. Het respect van de rookie die weet dat zijn teamgenoot de beste ooit is, samen met Schumacher, en het respect van Lewis. Het klinkt misschien gek maar je teamgenoot is je eerste vijand. Lewis is op een bepaalde manier de mentor van George."

Heb het net al elders geplaatst. Toto is niet van plan om tijdens de race in Japan aanwezig te zijn. Misschien dat hij vanwege de uitslag van de budgetcap toch afreist naar Japan.
