Vettel verklaart Japans dankwoord: "Deze plek heeft mij zoveel geluk geven"

Sebastian Vettel kende een zeer goede zaterdag in Japan. De Duitse Aston Martin-coureur is enorm populair in Japan en hij liet zijn fans dan ook juichen in de kwalificatie. De viervoudig wereldkampioen haalde voor het eerst sinds tijden de derde kwalificatiesessie en start de race morgen vanaf de negende plaats.

Na afloop van zijn enkele run in de derde kwalificatiesessie bedankte hij zijn fans uitgebreid over de boordradio. Met een welgemeend 'Arigato Suzuka' bedankte hij de fans in hun eigen taal. Hij voltooide zijn outlap terwijl hij uitgebreid zwaaide naar de velen Japanners op de tribunes. Vettel beleefde een sterke dag en was goed gehumeurd.

Steun

Na afloop van de kwalificatie verscheen Vettel bij de internationale media. De Duitse Aston Martin-coureur besprak zijn dankwoorden en kwalificatie tegenover Autosport: "Ik genoot van de gehele kwalificatie. Het was heel erg close om Q2 te bereiken, ook voor Q3 was dat het geval. Het was een fantastische dag voor ons. Ik krijg hier zoveel steun. Het is fantastisch, er is zoveel energie en de mensen zijn blij dat we hier weer zijn. Er waren heel veel Duitse vlaggen en ik vond het nodig om ze te bedanken."

Spontaan

Vettel had zijn Japanse dankwoord niet van te voren ingestudeerd. De Duitser gaf aan dat hij het plannetje ineens in zijn hoofd kreeg. Hij toonde zich na afloop dan ook dankbaar: "Dit was een spontane actie. Deze plek heeft mij zoveel geluk gegeven. Je krijgt hier echt het gevoel dat alles zo leeft terwijl je in de auto zit. Ik had het gevoel dat dit het juiste was om dankjewel te zeggen."

blijft toch apart, altijd zoveel moeite in Q1, vandaag ook weer, maar als daar het kwartje net wel goed valt dan kun je blijkbaar ook gewoon nog helemaal op P9 terecht komen. Eén van de beste sessie's van Vettel dit jaar. Race in Singapore was ook al erg goed. Azië heeft m altijd al beter gelegen dan Europa.
