Verstappen denkt nog niet aan titelprolongatie: "Pole is tenminste een goed begin"

De kans is aanwezig dat Max Verstappen zich vanaf vandaag een tweevoudig wereldkampioen mag noemen. De Nederlandse Red Bull Racing-coureur kon in Suzuka zijn tweede wereldtitel bijschrijven. Hij start de Grand Prix vandaag vanaf de pole position en heeft dus een goede kans op het best mogelijk resultaat.

Verstappen was gisteren zeer snel in de kwalificatie. Toch werd het in de slotseconden nog eventjes spannend. Verstappen kon maar één run voltooien nadat hij in zijn tweede run te wijd was gegaan en zijn wagen had beschadigd. Ferrari-coureurs Charles Leclerc en Carlos Sainz kwamen dichtbij maar kwamen net tekort. Verstappen ontsnapte tevens aan een straf en behield zijn pole.

Na afloop wilde de Nederlandse Red Bull-coureur niet vooruit lopen op een mogelijke tweede wereldtitel. Tijdens de persconferentie voor de top drie sprak hij zich uit: "Ik denk er niet teveel aan. Ik bekijk het dag voor dag. Ik denk dat het het belangrijkste is dat we een competitieve auto hebben. Dat hadden we nu in de kwalificatie. Ik hoop dat het hetzelfde zal zijn in de race. We hebben een perfecte race nodig om te winnen. Dit is tenminste een goed begin."
