Mercedes verklaart aanstaande updates: "Hopelijk zorgt het voor iets meer prestaties"

Het huidige Formule 1-seizoen telt nog maar vier Grand Prix-weekenden. Volgende week reist het Formule 1-circus af naar Austin voor de Amerikaanse Grand Prix. Op het Circuit of the Americas zullen veel teams zich vooral focussen op het raceweekend, Mercedes komt echter met een grote update.

Mercedes is bezig met een teleurstellend seizoen in de Formule 1. De Duitse renstal is nog steeds de regerend constructeurskampioen maar ze gaan die titel vroeg of laat verliezen aan Red Bull. In Austin hoopt Mercedes beter voor de dag te komen met een update met nieuwe aerodynamische onderdelen en lichtere onderdelen. Hierdoor wordt de auto weer wat lichter.

Prestaties

Aangezien het huidige seizoen zo goed als gespeeld is, Max Verstappen is al wereldkampioen en Red Bull heeft de titel bijna binnen, wil Mercedes de data gebruiken met het oog op volgend seizoen. Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin wordt geciteerd door Motorsport.com: "Het is de laatste stap van onze aerodynamische ontwikkeling. Hopelijk zorgt dat voor iets meer prestaties."

Gewichtslimiet

Shovlin geeft dan ook eerlijk toe dat de aankomende updates in Austin vooral gericht zijn op 2023. Volgens de Trackside Engineering Director geeft echter aan dat er nog een reden is van de update: "Belangrijker is dat we met iedere stap meer en meer leren en dat kunnen we meenemen naar volgend jaar. Dat speelt natuurlijk een rol maar we hebben ook een aantal onderdelen wat lichter gemaakt. We hopen daarmee de auto dichterbij de gewichtslimiet te krijgen."

" Corriere dello Sport"meld : Mercedes 'bereid om veelvoud van overschrijding te betalen'
Dat zou gebeuren op basis van een boete die vijf keer het uitgegeven bedrag is. Een overschrijding van twee miljoen dollar leidt dan tot een boete van tien miljoen. De FIA wees Red Bull eerder deze week erop dat de overschrijding in 2021 een kleine is, wat betekent dat het bedrag op kan lopen tot ruim zeven miljoen dollar. Naar verluidt overschreed Red Bull de limiet met zo'n twee miljoen dollar aan catering en ziekteverzuim.
