Brundle fel over tractorincident: "Volkomen onacceptabel"

De Japanse Grand Prix was afgelopen weekend een bizar spektakelstuk. De regen zorgde voor een lange onderbreking maar in die pauze hoefde niemand zich te vervelen. Het ging toen immers veelvuldig over het incident waarbij Pierre Gasly een tractor tegenkwam op de baan. Ook Martin Brundle is woest.

Gasly kwam op zijn weg terug naar de pits een tractor tegen over het circuit van Suzuka. Het bergingsvoertuig was bezig met het bergen van de Ferrari van de gecrashte Carlos Sainz. Door de spray zag Gasly geen hand voor ogen en kon hij op het nippertje de grote tractor ontwijken. De gedachten gingen direct terug naar het dodelijke ongeval van Jules Bianchi in 2014.

Onacceptabel

Oud-coureur en huidige Sky Sports-commentator Martin Brundle deelt de woede van Gasly. De Brit hoopt dat er snel maatregelen worden genomen. In het Sky Sports-programma Any Driven Monday spreekt hij zich uit: "Het is volkomen onacceptabel. Naar mijn mening moest dit een directe rode vlag zijn. Dit omdat iedereen op dat moment rondreed op de inters."

Brundle spreekt uit ervaring en weet hoe link een rondje Suzuka kan zijn in de stromende regen. De Brit hoopt dat men gaat luisteren naar de coureurs: "Je kan in de auto niet zien waar je bent. Je gaat nog steeds best snel als je achter de Safety Car rijdt. Ik vermoed dat de gestrande Williams van Alexander Albon ook nog ergens stond. Ik heb nog meer beelden gezien, die tractor stond daar midden op de baan en er liepen marshalls op de baan. Hier moet men van leren."

De race was afgevlagd. Als Gasly stapvoets was langsgereden was er niks aan de had geweest. Ik zou eerst even het onderzoek afwachten - per saldo gaat het om timing: wanneer wist wie wat?
We moeten ook niet vergeten dat er veel kritiek is op de trage afhandeling van het wegslepen - zie Monza.2022. Alleen, die druk geldt bij gele-vlagsituaties, niet bij een rode vlag. Dus dat iemand heeft zitten slapen is duidelijk.

  De rode vlag kwam 1/2 tot 1 seconden voordat hij de tractor passeerde uit. Maar jij had dan al afgeremd van 200km/h naar 50 km/h

Het gekke is dat de onboard beelden niet overeenkomen met de beelden die iemand langs de baan heeft gemaakt. Die beelden laten namelijk zien dat er op dat moment geen spray hing, want eigenlijk ook logisch is. De safety car met de rest van het veld reden rustig langs en een tijdje erna kwam Gasly voorbij rijden. De auto's zorgde voor nagenoeg geen spray en de beelden waren ook veel duidelijker dan de onboard camera. In mijn ogen maakt men nu een hoop drama omdat men de onboard beelden ziet die erg wazig zijn, waarschijnlijk door een vuile of vochtige camera. Gasly is gewoon fout, hij wist dat Sainz daar van de baan was geschoten en heeft notabene een reclamebord daar op de neus gekregen. Maar hij rijdt daar toch veel te hard langs. De Fia moet vanaf nu wel aangegeven dat er een bergingsvoertuig de baan op is gegaan, dan is dat voor iedereen duidelijk. Maar ik vind ook dat men een slowzone moet instellen op dit plekken.

  Het lijkt me ook niet zo moeilijk zo'n kraanwagen met wat stootkussens uit te rusten - voor het geval dat.
