Welke acties nam de FIA na controverse met kraanwagen?

In Suzuka ontstond commotie over een hijskraan die op de baan reed terwijl coureurs op een nat circuit met weinig zicht op relatief hoge snelheid er langs reden. Met name Pierre Gasly was erg geschrokken, mede ook omdat het herinneringen opriep over Jules Bianchi die door de gevolgen van een ongeval met een bergingsvoertuig overleed. "Ik had wel dood kunnen zijn", zei de Fransman.

De FIA onderzocht na een klachtenregen de situatie en kwam tot de volgende maatregelen die de autosportbond vrijdagavond publiceerde in een persbericht.

Maatregelen

- Informatie die aan de teams moet worden verstrekt door middel van een bericht via het officiële berichtensysteem en wordt gecommuniceerd via het FIA-intercomsysteem om teams te informeren dat een bergingsvoertuig op het circuit is. De teams hebben de verplichting om hun coureurs te informeren.

- Ontwikkeling van een live VSC/SC-monitoringvenster om de status van alle auto's, op de baan, achter SC, in PITS weer te geven voor gebruik door Race Control en het Remote Operations Centre.

- Race Control Procedure Update om de toewijzing van taken over het Race Control-team beter te definiëren (inclusief delegatie van monitoringtaken aan ROC zoals vereist) volgens de SC- of VSC-procedure. Specifiek met betrekking tot deze herziening, het toezicht op auto's die de pitlane betreden onder SC-omstandigheden en de daaruit voortvloeiende lengte van de auto’s achter Safety Car.

- De FIA Race Director zal een evaluatie houden van de incidenten in Suzuka tijdens de Grand Prix Drivers' Briefing van de Verenigde Staten om uit te leggen welke oplossingen de FIA van plan is te introduceren om herhaling van de situatie in de toekomst te voorkomen en om de coureurs te herinneren aan de regels met betrekking tot tot Safety Cars en Red Flags.

- Dynamische VSC: implementatie van een nieuwe functie die de deltasnelheid zou veranderen die de bestuurder nodig heeft om te volgen voor en in de sectoren waar zich een incident voordoet, dit zou de bestuurders helpen om te weten waar incidenten zijn gemeld. In samenwerking met de teams zal er een herziening plaatsvinden van de strafprocedures voor coureurs die de regels met betrekking tot geel, dubbel geel, VSC en SC niet respecteren.

- Beoordeling van de huidige toepassing van reclameborden, hun constructie, locatie en gebruikte materialen om te voorkomen dat ze worden afgescheurd en op de baan worden geslingerd.
