Hamilton hoopvol na 2023-updates: "Alles ging volgens plan"

Lewis Hamilton eindigde bij de Grand Prix van de Verenigde Staten op plaats drie in de eerste vrije training en heeft data verzameld voor nieuwe onderdelen met het oog op 2023. Volgens Mercedes waren de resultaten volgens verwachting en blijven de updates het hele weekend op de auto zitten.

In de tweede training was een bandentest voor Pirelli en daar eindigde de zevenvoudig kampioen op P8.

"Alles ging vandaag volgens plan", begon Hamilton na de vrijdag in Austin. "Ik ben iedereen in de fabriek super dankbaar dat ze zo hard hebben gewerkt en ons upgrades voor dit weekend hebben gebracht."

"Het is een ongelooflijk zwaar jaar voor ons geweest en het team is continu aan het pushen. Iedereen bleef doorwerken en het voelt alsof we vooruitgang boeken met de prestaties van de auto."

"VT2 gaf ons geen echte aanwijzingen over onze prestaties vanwege het testen van de banden, maar VT1 voelde redelijk goed aan. We zullen hopelijk vanavond wat veranderingen aanbrengen en we zullen morgen ontdekken waar we precies staan - maar het voelt niet alsof we te ver weg zijn."

Hamilton zoomde nog eventjes in op de speciale bandentest van Pirelli. "Het was een leuk experiment, je weet niet wat je kunt verwachten als je eropuit gaat en er is altijd een andere balans, omdat de banden elke keer dat je eropuit gaat op een andere manier werken. Ik heb geprobeerd in het ritme te komen en te voelen wat die verschillen zijn. In voorgaande jaren was het veel voorspelbaarder - met de huidige auto moet je er veel meer aan bouwen en je probeert die ervaringen mee te nemen."

"Verschrikkelijk, mijn God", zegt Hamilton over het gevoel in de W13 op de hobbels in Austin. "Na Montreal ben ik hier gekomen en reed ik met de auto van vorig jaar. Toen was het heel goed en ik weet nog dat ik bij het uitstappen een lach van oor tot oor had. Het asfalt was zo glad en ik had veel downforce en vermogen.
Dit jaar hebben we wat vermogen verloren door de biobrandstof, maar de auto is ook enorm stijf...
Gelukkig heb ik niet veel vullingen, want anders waren ze er dit jaar allemaal uitgekomen. Het is zo, zo hobbelig.
Ik hoop echt dat we volgend jaar een minder hobbelende auto hebben."
