Vettel sluit reserverol uit: "Wat doe je dan eigenlijk?"

Sebastian Vettel zegt dat een verblijf in de Formule 1 als reservecoureur is uitgesloten. Hoewel Haas-teambaas Gunther Steiner de werkloze McLaren-coureur Daniel Ricciardo heeft uitgenodigd om hem te bellen, lijkt de 33-jarige Australiër voorbestemd om in 2023 uit te zitten als de nieuwe reservecoureur van Mercedes.

Ricciardo reageerde in Austin: "Je zult me wel zien volgend jaar. Het zal voor mij iets anders zijn, maar er is nog steeds een plan gaande. Het is niet 'tot ziens'. Dat is verre van het geval. Ik ben een plan aan het samenstellen om te proberen terug te keren naar de voorkant van de grid en terug te gaan naar winnende teams. Dat plan moet zeker gaan lukken want ik ben capabel genoeg."

De met pensioen gaande viervoudig wereldkampioen Vettel maakt dergelijke plannen echter niet. Hij vertelde tegen Bild: "Wat doet een reservecoureur eigenlijk? Hij komt naar de races en doet dan niets, toch? Dat is echt uitgesloten voor mij. Tenzij we het over Suzuka hebben!"

Comeback in Suzuka

Tijdens de Japanse Grand Prix gaf de 35-jarige Duitser onlangs inderdaad toe dat hij volgend jaar een eenmalige terugkeer van Suzuka zou overwegen.

"Misschien wordt een van de coureurs ziek. Dat wens ik niemand toe, maar ik zou het niet erg vinden om op elk moment weer in te springen voor een race op Suzuka", glimlachte hij.

Hulk heeft vrij weinig gepresteerd en mag hopen op meer, die moet pakken wat hij pakken kan.

Ach wat doe je dan? Beetje afbouwen van een jarenlange carriere. Dat kan best prettig uitpakken. Af en toe een race'je misschien moet 'ie eens Hulk vragen hoe dat voelt.

Vettel behoort nog altijd tot de beste 50% van de grid en daarom is het jammer dat hij afzwaait. De aanwezigheid van gentleman racers snap ik nog, maar zie ik de noodzaak van het verjongen om het verjongen niet. Ik zie veel liever Vettel dan Albon, Tsunoda of een andere geep die toevallig een keer zesde is geworden in de GP2 en een paar trainingen heeft gereden.

Gewoon stoppen. over een jaartje 1-2-3 zal hij zich wel gaan vervelen, dan zal Red Bull wel een baan voor Vettel creëren.
