Russell emotioneel na eerste zege: "Geweldig gevoel!"

George Russell greep vandaag zijn eerste Grand Prix-zege uit zijn nog prille Formule 1-loopbaan. De Britse Mercedes-coureur reed een ijzersterke race en zijn eerste zege kwam op geen enkel moment echt in gevaar. Na afloop was hij geëmotioneerd en dolblij met zijn eerste zege, waarschijnlijk ook niet zijn laatste.

Russell oogde gisteren al snel in de sprint op het circuit van Interlagos. De Brit passeerde toen Max Verstappen en greep zijn allereerste sprintzege. Een zege in de sprint is echter geen echte zege en Russell wist dat. In de race had hij alles onder controle en hield hij zijn hoofdkoel bij de twee Safety Car-herstarts.

Geweldig gevoel

Na afloop van de race stond Russell met natte ogen op het podium. Even daarvoor verscheen hij met eveneens natte ogen voor de microfoon van interviewer van dienst Felipe Massa. Russell was dolblij: "Wat een geweldig gevoel! Ik wit het hele team bedanken, ze hebben dit mogelijk gemaakt. Het was een emotionele rollercoaster dit jaar en dit was een enorm zware race, Lewis was ook zo snel!"

Slotfase

Russells teamgenoot Lewis Hamilton kwam in de slotfase nog heel erg dichtbij maar Russell hield het hoofdkoel. De Brit geeft na afloop toe dat hij het best spannend vond: "Toen ik die Safety Car zag dacht ik: 'Jezus, dit wordt een heel erg lastige slotfase.' Hij zette de druk er vol op. Ik ben dus blij dat ik naar huis kan gaan met de zege. Ik ben echt sprakeloos, tijdens de outlap kwamen alle herinneringen uit mijn karttijd terug."

Ik vind Mercedes echt een verschrikkelijk team. Alles is nep en geacteerd. Met beide coureurs heb ik ook helemaal niks. Beiden onuitstaanbaar.
Toch heeft Mercedes hier een puike prestatie neergezet. Ook Russell heeft geweldig gepresteerd in de afgelopen twee dagen. Ik kan hier alleen maar respect... [Lees verder]

Keurig gedaan, keurig! Bezorgt Mercedes haar eerste zege van het seizoen. Hij heeft het verdiend, rijdt een beter seizoen dan Lewis en pakte de zege zoals je hem hoort te pakken. Denk dat de beer nu los is en Lewis zijn borst echt nat kan gaan maken. Max ook trouwens maar dat is prima.

  Waarom rijdt Russell een beter seizoen als Hamilton? Zijn start van het jaar was zeker beter maar de laatste maanden had Hamilton toch wel weer de overliggende hand?

  Omdat hij 25 punten meer heeft. Vergeet niet dat het zijn eerste Mercedes seizoen is en wanneer je dan gelijk een 7 WC verslaat (die dat echt niet leuk vindt) zegt dat heul veel

Zwaar verdiende overwinning. Zwaar en zwaar verdiend.
De beste man is goed in races kapot maken van een ander, maar vandaag, vandaag niet. Vandaag was Russell bikkelhard. Gereden als een winnaar.

Mooi dat ie m eindelijk binnen heeft. Dan kan het Bahrein 2020 verhaal iig definitief achter gelaten worden ipv dat het misschien steeds weer groter wordt. En die laatste SC geeft de overwinning nog wat extra glans, valt nu echt 0,0 op af te dingen.
