Aston Martin kijkt hoopgevend vooruit naar GP Abu Dhabi

Vijf magere punten staat Alfa Romeo van Aston Martin los. De eindposities in het constructeursklassement zijn vanwege het verschil in prijsgeld van belang en zodoende met nog één race resterend heeft het team van Aston Martin bij de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi het doel om punten te scoren.

Bij de Braziliaanse Grand Prix kenden Aston Martin-coureurs Sebastian Vettel en Lance Stroll hun positieve momenten. Stroll had opnieuw een goede start van de race en klom snel van de vijftiende startplaats richting de top tien. Vooral voor Vettel zag de zondagmiddag op Interlagos er in eerste instantie rooskleurig uit met een goede eerste stint, maar de viervoudig wereldkampioen viel uiteindelijk halverwege de race in posities omlaag. De timing van de virtual safety car en de fysieke safety car in ronde 52 viel niet lekker voor Vettel, ondanks een eerder zicht op een redelijke puntenscore.

"Ik had een redelijke pace te pakken”, vertelt Vettel op de website van Aston Martin. “De timing van de tweede safety car was ongelukkig omdat ik op de mediums stond en degenen om mij heen op de zachte band. Voor mijn gevoel hadden we vandaag meer punten moeten behalen – maar terugkijkend hoe de race verliep denk ik niet dat we meer konden doen. Dit is racen." De viervoudig wereldkampioen stopt aan het einde van dit seizoen. Vettel zal namens zijn team het uiterste uit zijn Aston Martin proberen te halen in een poging om Alfa Romeo alsnog te verslaan.

Aston Martin’s teambaas Mike Krack kijkt hoopvol uit naar Yas Marina. "Sebastian reed snel op zijn tweestop-strategie, maar een ongelukkige safety car timing viel hem niet goed. Lance had opnieuw een bloedsnelle start en kon uiteindelijk een punt binnenhalen. Door onze sterke pace vertrekken we goed gemotiveerd richting Abu Dhabi", sluit Krack af.

Vettel had een vergelijkbare race met 2019, reed ver voor zn teamgenoot, maar een late SC gooide alles overhoop en teamgenoot gaat m op betere banden alsnog voorbij. Aston Martin zit er 2e seizoenshelft goed bij, met name Vettel rijdt vaak op mooie posities rond, ondanks dat hij gisteren geen loon naar werken kreeg. Lance Stroll heeft niet dat talent en blijft dan ook meestal achter op Seb.

Op een bepaald moment kwam zelfs het podium nog een klein beetje in de buurt. Dat je dan uiteindelijk 11e wordt is dan wel bijzonder jammer. Maar goed, liever zo 11e, dan kleurloos 9e of 10e.
