Vettel stopte pensioenbeslissing lang weg: "Toen was het een opluchting"

Aankomend weekend neemt Sebastian Vettel afscheid van de Formule 1. De Duitse viervoudig wereldkampioen rijdt in Abu Dhabi zijn laatste Grand Prix alvorens hij zijn helm aan de wilgen hangt. Vettel zelf geeft aan dat hij zijn gevoelens over een mogelijk pensioen heel erg lang wegstopte.

Halverwege het huidige seizoen maakte Vettel bekend dat hij na de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi met pensioen gaat. De Aston Martin-coureur wordt sindsdien op elk circuit toegejuicht door de aanwezige fans en zijn sterrenstatus lijkt groter dan ooit. Ook zijn resultaten zitten in de lift maar men hoeft er niet op te rekenen dat Vettel terugkomt van zijn beslissing.

Genieten

Vettel is in zijn hoofd al aan het aftellen naar zijn aanstaande pensioen. De Duitser wil nog één keer vlammen en hij spreekt zich erover uit in de podcast Beyond the Grid: "Ik voel mij goed. Je kunt je wel voorstellen dat het aftellen is begonnen nadat ik deze beslissing had genomen. Ik kijk wel uit naar de laatste Grand Prix. Ik heb niet echt verwachtingen omdat dit de laatste is. Ik probeer er vooral van te genieten."

Opluchting

Vettel speelde al langer met het idee om zijn helm aan de wilgen te gaan hangen. Hij realiseerde dat het een beslissing was die zijn leven verandert: "Ik heb er lang over nagedacht. Ik heb er geruime tijd mee geworsteld. Ik heb er veel over gesproken met mijn vrouw, ik heb er ook over gesproken met mijzelf. Ik probeerde te begrijpen wat ik wil. Ik realiseerde mij wel dat het misschien tijd was om te stoppen. Ik heb dat een tijd weggestopt maar het gevoel begon te groeien. Toen de beslissing er was en iedereen het wist, toen was het een opluchting."

En toch vind ik het wel jammer. Hij zit bij het verkeerde team en kan niet meer top presteren. Maar je ziet hem wel opstaan op het moment dat de condities lastiger worden. En dan zie je nog steeds dat Vettel een erg goede coureur is. Maar goed, 4 titels binnen en daarna is het ook bij een topteam als Ferrari niet meer gelukt en werd hij zelfs op de tweede plek gezet in het team door een daar net ingestroomde Leclerc.
Het is een keer goed geweest, ook voor Vettel. Maar ik ga zijn persoon en karakter wel missen. Het is een goede gast met aandacht voor de goede dingen.
