Gasly verwacht emotioneel laatste weekend: "Zoveel meer dan werkrelatie"

Pierre Gasly staat aan de vooravond van een bijzonder raceweekend in Abu Dhabi. De Franse coureur rijdt namelijk voor het laatst in dienst van zijn team AlphaTauri. Gasly rijdt vanaf aankomend seizoen voor het team van Alpine en hij geeft aan dat hij in Abu Dhabi een emotioneel weekend verwacht.

Gasly wordt al zijn gehele Formule 1-loopbaan gesteund door Red Bull. Als groot talent uit het Red Bull Junior Team debuteerde Gasly eind 2017 in de Formule 1 bij het toenmalige Toro Rosso. In 2019 werd hij gepromoveerd naar Red Bull Racing, halverwege het jaar werd hij echter teruggeplaatst bij Toro Rosso. Sindsdien rijdt Gasly voor het team dat tegenwoordig AlphaTauri heet.

Emotioneel weekend

Alhoewel Gasly uitkijkt naar zijn Alpine-avontuur, wil hij nog een keer vlammen in dienst van AlphaTauri. In een persbericht van zijn team spreekt hij zich uit: "Dit wordt natuurlijk een enorm emotioneel weekend. Het is mijn laatste bij het team, we hebben vijf jaar samengewerkt. Onze relatie is zoveel meer dan een werkrelatie. Ik ken alle engineers, monteurs en mensen op de fabriek persoonlijk. We hebben zelfs in onze privélevens veel tijd samen doorgebracht."

Vijf jaar

Gasly weet dat het anno 2022 niet meer vanzelfsprekend is dat een coureur zo lang onderdeel is van eenzelfde team. Hij wil nog één keer vlammen: "Het is de laatste race van een lange gezamenlijke historie. Ik denk niet dat veel coureurs vijf jaar doorbrengen bij een team. We hebben zoveel mooie momenten meegemaakt. Wat er dit weekend ook gebeurt, ik zal mijn best doen om een goed weekend te hebben en om een mooi resultaat neer te zetten."

  Ik hoop dat hij Ocon helemaal zoek rijdt en dat we mede daarom na 2024 afscheid kunnen nemen van hem. Wat mij betreft is hij niets meer dan veldvulling die afentoe met een domme actie de aandacht op zich vestigt.
