Viervoudig wereldkampioen Sebastian Vettel heeft officieel afscheid genomen van de Formule 1. Voorafgaand aan de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi organiseerde zijn team van Aston Martin een unieke actie om de wereldwijde Vettel-fans de kans te geven een boodschap achter te laten. Honderden reacties en vele speciale video’s later is de #DankeSeb videocompilatie een feit.

Het Formule 1-seizoen van 2022 is, los van de ééndaagse “Young Driver Test” officieel afgesloten. De beëindiging van de Grand Prix-kalender van dit jaar betekende dat er afscheid genomen werd van maar liefst vier coureurs. De opvaller tussen het rijtje is overduidelijk Sebastian Vettel. De Duitser debuteerde als jonge bloedhond in 2007 voor het team van BMW Sauber. 299 starts, 53 overwinningen en vier wereldkampioenschappen later neemt Vettel officieel afscheid van zijn geliefde Formule 1.

Bij de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi kon Vettel nog een mooie dosis racen meemaken. In de beginfase van de race ontstond er een spannend duel tussen de Aston Martin-coureur en Esteban Ocon, In de slotfase duelleerde Vettel met mede-uitzwaaier Daniel Ricciardo. Na afloop van de hekkensluiter op het Yas Marina circuit benoemd Vettel de support van zijn fans. "Bedankt aan iedereen voor de support. Het was heel speciaal om alle vlaggen en lachende gezichten te zien. Ik zal het missen."

Onzin, Vettel is een van de grootheden in de F1. Behoort met gemak in de 10 beste coureurs aller tijden. Daarnaast was hij bij Ferrari in 2015 en 2017 heel erg goed. En bij Aston Martin was hij met gemak top 5 van het veld. Had alleen niet de auto.

Ik moet zeggen dat het, naar mijn smaak, een beetje over the top was het gedoe rondom Seb Vettel, Ok was in zijn topjaren bij RBR een goede piloot, maar speelde laatste jaren nauwelijks nog een rol van betekenis. Het lag er wat te dik bovenop vond ik. Wellicht feit dat het eigenlijk maar een saaie race was een beetje camoufleren

  Vind ik allen beter dan dat Vettel ooit heeft laten zien (soms door simpelweg veel te winnen, soms door de sport verder te ontwikkelen), en dan kun je cases maken.voor piquet, graham hill en in mijn ogen ook al verstappen.
  Dan valt hij in mijn ogen al buiten de top 10 allertijden. Dus met gemak top10 allertijden…nee met een beetje fantasie staat hij er net in.
  
  Vettel was natuurlijk een goede coureur maar niet de geweldenaar zoals de andere namen die ik noem.
  
  Het helpt ook niet mee dat ik Vettel een irritante blaag vond met zijn vingertje, fuck you charlie, en het onnodig proberen hamilton er uit te beuken tijdens een safety car. En dan later dat belerende klimaat gewauwel terwijl hij zelf 250keer per jaar de wereld over vloog…

  Precies dat belerende toontje daar ergerde ik me afgelopen zondag ook weer aan toen hij het niet kon nalaten om weer over bewustwording te beginnen..
  Met het vertrek van Seb zijn we iig voor een groot deel verlost van al die maatschappelijke boodschappen die men meent bij de fans door gewoon autosport willen zien door de strot te moeten schuiven.
