Szafnauer blij met uitkomst Piastri-zaak: "Ik denk dat Pierre sneller is"

Het team van Alpine heeft een roerig seizoen achter de rug. De Franse renstal kreeg dit jaar te maken met een fikse rel omtrent de komst van Oscar Piastri. Na tussenkomst van de Contract Recognition Board koos met eieren voor hun geld en schakelde het team over naar Pierre Gasly. Alpine denkt dat ze met de Fransman beter af zijn.

Het was het grote verhaal van de zomerstop: de rel omtrent Oscar Piastri. Toen het team van Aston Martin bekend maakte dat ze Fernando Alonso hadden aangetrokken voor 2023, moest Alpine opzoek gaan naar een nieuwe coureur. Al snel presenteerde men Piastri maar de Australiër ontkende het bestaan van het contract. Na lang gesteggel vertrok hij naar McLaren en trok Alpine AlphaTauri-coureur Pierre Gasly aan voor 2023.

CRB

Bij Alpine is men achteraf gezien niet rouwig om het vertrek van Piastri. Teambaas Otmar Szafnauer kan er wel meeleven en kijkt nog één keer terug op de zaak bij Motorsport.com: "De gedachte was dat Oscar een contract bij ons had. De Contract Recognition Board oordeelde er anders over en dat was een proces waar we doorheen moesten. We moesten naar de CRB om een oplossing te vinden. Zo is het leven, dat is waarom je organen hebt die oordelen als twee partijen wat anders denken."

Sneller

Na de zaak bij het CRB schakelde Szafnauer en consorten snel verder en men is tevreden met die keuze. De Alpine-teambaas kijkt positief vooruit: "We zien wel hoe we het volgend jaar gaan doen. Ik ben blij dat ons rijdersduo met Esteban Ocon en Pierre Gasly beter is dan het zou zijn geweest als we de zaak wel hadden gewonnen. Ik denk dat Pierre meer ervaring heeft en hij is ook nog jong. De tijd zal het leren maar ik denk dat hij sneller is."

  Ja haha, echt geen toffe uitspraak van Szaffie. Maar hij krijgt um vast weer terug als blijkt dat Gasly ook bij Alpine geen potten breekt en Piastri als een speer gaat.

Bij Alpine hebben ze al jaren meer vertrouwen in hun eigen kunnen dat dat ze al die jaren ook maar eens 1 keer hebben kunnen laten zien.

  Toch wel typerend voor dit team. Nu met Ocon en Gasly heeft het team eigenlijk precies het (Franse) scenario gekregen dat ze wilden. Eigenlijk vallen de puzzelstukjes perfect op hun plek.

  @PB; buiten waar de 'schuld' ligt (al ligt die volgens de arbitrage ook bij Alpine) geeft dit geen pas. Bovendien komt dit als een boomerang terug want ik kan me niet voorstellen dat Piastri een mindere coureur is als dat Pierre is. Ik heb bij Gasly namelijk geen enkele leercurve omhoog zien gaan nadat ie teruggezet is.

  @Beemerdude, ben het wel met je eens. Kwam terecht in een AT die makkelijker te besturen was dan de RB, maar wel veel goede onderdelen van RB gebruikte (zoals Haas het doet van Ferrari). Nu dit jaar ging dat even niet op door de nieuwe regelgeving en moest AT veel zelf ontwikkelen. Met een matige middenveld auto heeft hij mij niet laten zien dat hij heel veel sneller was dan Yuki. Top 5 in Baku was leuk, maar daarna was de glans van Gasly zijn seizoen er wel af.

Gasly bewezen snel maar niet snel genoeg. Piastri wss snel en alom beschouwd als wk materiaal.
Puur marketing technisch is Alpine echt een draak van een team, alles frans. 2 coureurs waarvan er 1 de uitstraling van een houten deur heeft en de ander toch van rising star naar gemiddeld niveau is gegaan. Piastri had een andere markt aangeboord en meer hippe jonge mensen gebonden aan het merk.

Als na 2 races Gasly en Ocon elkaar er 2 keer afgerost hebben gaan ze nog wel een keer achter het franse oor krabben.
Nu was Alonso vaak de verstandige in de buurt van Ocon (en dat zegt wel wat als Alonso vesrtandig doet). Volgend jaar gaat geen van de 2 toegeven om geen gezichtsverlies te lijden vrees ik voor Alpine

Ach, het wordt hem ook maar gevraagd en dan ga je natuurlijk het geheel positief benaderen. Dat is geen mes in de rug van Piastri en ook geen trap na maar je huidige coureurs een steun in de rug geven.
