Latifi noemt 2022 'slechtste jaar' van zijn Formule 1-carrière

Nicholas Latifi zit, na een periode van drie jaar voor het team van Williams te hebben gereden, zonder Formule 1-stoeltje. De Canadees wist het afgelopen seizoen onvoldoende indruk te maken op zijn Britse werkgever, waardoor het team ervoor gekozen heeft om rookie Logan Sargeant als zijn vervanger te benoemen. Latifi reflecteert op zijn presteren in het afgelopen seizoen.

Nicholas Latifi heeft inmiddels de tijd en ruimte gekregen om terug te kunnen kijken naar zijn prestaties in de Formule 1. De Canadees kreeg eerder dit seizoen te horen dat zijn team van Williams voor volgend jaar niet verder met hem wou en dat het op zoek zou gaan naar een vervanger. Latifi reflecteert op zijn periode als voltijd Formule 1-coureur.

"Mijn eerste twee jaren waren zoals je die kan verwachten van iemand die zijn eerste jaren in de Formule 1 ervaart. Een rookie-seizoen is een rookie-seizoen. In het tweede jaar waren er op alle vlakken verbeteringen. Ik denk echter dat we dit jaar collectief als team een stap terug hebben gezet."

"Ik had gewoon veel moeite om de auto onder controle te krijgen. Er waren verschillende problemen – tuurlijk vallen sommige problemen binnen mijn controleveld, sommige daarbuiten. Dat is motorsport, zo gaan die dingen. Dit seizoen, achteraf gezien het meest cruciale seizoen voor mij om mijn toekomst (in de Formule 1) te verzekeren, was de slechtste van de drie. Dat is de realiteit."

Latifi heeft uiteindelijk zijn doel om de Formule 1 te bereiken definitief behaald. De 27-jarige Canadees is in ieder geval nog niet op de koningsklasse uitgekeken. "Het zou geweldig zijn om door te kunnen gaan in de Formule 1. Dat is mijn doel, daar wil ik deel van uitmaken. Maar het lijkt er overduidelijk op dat het niet het geval zal zijn. Ik ben dankbaar voor de kans die ik gedurende de afgelopen drie jaar heb gehad en ben me bewust van de bevoorrechtende positie waar ik in verkeer. Heel veel mensen zouden er alles voor doen om één race te mogen rijden, laat staan drie jaar in de Formule 1, dus daar ben ik dankbaar voor", sluit Latifi af.
