Sainz noemt 2022 meest leerzame jaar uit F1-carrière

Ferrari-coureur Carlos Sainz sloot het 2022-seizoen van de Formule 1 af op een vijfde finishplaats in het rijdersklassement. Met verschillende hoogte- en laagtepunten achter de rug meent Sainz dat 2022 het meest leerzame jaar van zijn Formule 1-carrière tot nu toe is.

Het afgelopen seizoen was voor Carlos Sainz een achtbaan van hoogte- en laagtepunten. Een hoogtepunt was zijn allereerste Grand Prix-overwinning bij de Grand Prix van Groot-Brittannië, laagtepunten waren de zes "DNF’s" die de Spanjaard achter zijn naam moest laten bijschrijven. Reflecterend op 2022 laat Sainz weten dat hij, ondanks een aantal flinke dompers, veel positiefs uit het afgelopen seizoen haalt.

Op de vraag of Sainz geleerd heeft van zijn bewogen seizoen, antwoordt Sainz: "Eerlijk gezegd heel veel. Het was een lastige start van het seizoen voor me waarin ik vrijwel meteen op een achterstand kwam. Maar ik ben zeer trots op de manier hoe ik het seizoen heb weten om te keren, de manier hoe ik mijn motivatie heb blijven behouden, ondanks alle positieve en negatieve situaties waarin we ons verkeerden. Ondanks dat ik, maar ook wij als team zijnde zoveel DNF's hadden, wisten we het seizoen om te draaien."

De karakteristieken van de F1-75 bolide van Ferrari bleken niet helemaal bij Sainz' voorkeuren te passen. De Spanjaard meent dan ook dat zijn ervaringen in het onder controle krijgen van de wagen ervoor gezorgd hebben dat 2022 het meest leerzame jaar uit zijn Formule 1-carrière tot nu toe was. "Ik zat in een positie waar ik bij de eerste vijf, zes races constant langzamer was. Ik moest ervoor vechten om mijn rijstijl aan te passen, om nieuwe dingen op de auto uit te proberen en ervoor te zorgen dat de auto meer bij mijn voorkeuren paste. In die zin denk ik dat ik het afgelopen jaar het meest geleerd heb sinds 2015 – het jaar van mijn debuutseizoen", sluit Sainz af.

Er kan zeker gesteld worden dat Carlos zich gaandeweg het seizoen leek te herpakken en even een beduidend sterkere periode kende. Hij bleef en blijft echter wel de mindere van Charles en komt gewoon structureel tekort op de echte top. Hoe mooi hij het ook brengt, hoe omhoog hij en zijn entourage zich ook praten en hoeveel hulp hij ook krijgt vanuit Ferrari. Je kan die laatste twee a drie tiende gewoon niet goed maken met hard werken (ze werken allemaal hard) of mooie praatjes. Zolang Carlos nog in zichzelf gelooft zal hij een sterke rijder blijven maar zodra het punt komt dat hij zich realiseert dat zelfs in zijn beste vorm mannen als Charles, Max, George en misschien straks ook Lando of Oscar een maatje te groot blijven stort hij mentaal in. Dan wordt het niveau Ricciardo met steeds meer frustratie en ongeloof. Carlos zit niet ver van dat omslagpunt af. Hij zit nu in de fase waar Daniël in 2017-2018 zat.
Het is even afwachten of de nieuwe Ferrari teambaas Charles op de troon zal zetten of dat hij Carlos nog een seizoen langer in de waan laat. Gaat Charles op de troon dan zullen we Carlos vanaf midden 2023 en begin 2024 steeds minder zien presteren. Daarna komt de overstap naar een minder team om zogenaamd 1e rijder te worden en is het laatste hoofdstuk aangebroken.

  Carlos is een hele goede coureur en eentje die onder de juiste omstandigheden met de juiste auto zelfs kampioen kan worden. Maar die auto is er tot nu toe niet en de omstandigheden al helemaal niet. Zolang jongens als Max, George rondrijden en hij Charles als teammaat heeft komen die er ook nooit.
  Dat hij behoorlijk kan aanklampen bij Charles maakt hem eigenlijk voor Ferrari de ideale tweede man. Zoiets zou elke team wel willen, voor een gooi naar de constructeurstitel is het geweldig.
  Punt is alleen, en dat stel jij ook al, hoe lang duurt het voordat Carlos erachter komt dat dat zijn rol is. Er is niets wat demotiverender werkt als ontdekken dat je het net niet hebt. Dat hele kleine stukje snelheid, dat hele kleine stukje talent.
  Als hij daar achter komt, gaat het hard achteruit, inderdaad net als bij Ricciardo.
  Leclerc is duidelijk, hij wil de rolverdeling waarvan hij vindt dat die hem toekomt.
  Hij heeft gelijk en als de nieuwe teambaas dat ook zo ziet heeft Sainz zijn beste jaar nu gehad.

Maar toch niet zoveel geleerd .
Zal niet veel sneller worden dan hij nu is.
Daarom wordt hij waarschijnlijk nooit wk.
