Brown: Vervang GP China alleen met een passende race

Voor het vierde achtereenvolgende jaar zal de Formule 1 niet op het Shanghai International Circuit aanlanden. China’s strenge Covid-19 lockdowns betekenen dat er een ruimte is ontstaan om een alternatief circuit aan de F1-kalender van 2023 toe te voegen. McLaren-baas Zak Brown benadrukt dat de Formule 1 alleen een vervanger moet aanwijzen als het om een gepaste vervanger gaat.

Vorige week verscheen het nieuws dat de Chinese Grand Prix van 2023 is afgeblazen. Tussen de Grands Prix van Australië en Azerbeidzjan is zodoende een periode van vier weken ontstaan waarin er geen Grand Prix gepland staat. Met de missie in het achterhoofd om volgend seizoen maar liefst 24 Grands Prix te organiseren, is de Formule 1 druk bezig om een vervangende gastheer te vinden. McLaren-topman Zak Brown vertelt tegen Sky dat het rondreis- en racende circus goed de overweging moet maken om een ‘passende race’ als alternatief te vinden.

"We moeten die periode niet zomaar opvullen", vertelt Brown. Niet geheel verrassend werd ook de Formule 1 door de gevolgen van de coronapandemie geraakt. In 2020 werd de start van het seizoen met meerdere maanden vertraagd en werden verschillende races afgelast. Alternatieve opties zoals een Grand Prix in Turkije en Portugal werden toen gevonden; vandaag de dag worden juist deze twee gastlanden gelinkt aan onderhandelingen met de Formule 1 om de Chinese race te vervangen.

Dat Brown fan is van de potenties die de Aziatische markt de Formule 1 kan bieden, is geen geheim. De Amerikaan van oorsprong laat dan ook weten het 'zeer jammer' te vinden dat de Chinese GP afgelast is. "Ik ben van mening dat het een belangrijke markt is. Hopelijk krijgen ze alle Covid-gerelateerde problemen opgelost en kunnen we in 2024 terugkomen."

  Had toch gehoopt dat de gevulde teambaas met het windtunnelhaar van het roemruchte papaya oranje team uit Woking voor de autoSPORT zou kiezen en zou wensen dat de Chinese GP vervangen zou worden door een circuit waarop minimaal zoveel race-acties verwacht kunnen worden.
  Dat moet m.i. de prioriteit hebben...

Misschien een gekke alternatief: geen alternatief.

Wat is het met die obsessie om per se 24 races te hebben? Bovendien klinkt het veel leuker. 2023: 23 races. 2024: 24 races.

  het seizoen is dan pas net begonnen en dan krijg je meteen al een gat van 4 weken tussen de races van Australie en Azerbeidzjan. Zijn we net uit dat zwarte gat gekropen, vallen we we achterover er weer in.

  Dat is een goed argument, maar voor de teams zou het misschien minder belastend zijn. De race in China zou op 16 april plaats moeten vinden toch? Dan moet je over 2 weken weer in Baku zijn, meteen doorvliegen naar Miami en dan 2 weken daarna naar Italië.
  
  Dat is best een behoorlijk schema als er zoveel races nog te gaan zijn.

  Sepang zou inderdaad heel mooi zijn en ook op dezelfde route, een 2e race in Japan(Fuji, Motegi) zou misschien ook kunnen, volgens mij belangstelling zat daar
